Called and hung up. I called back and call could not be connected !

Caller: Said were from Aust Bureau Statistics

Lady said was calling from ABS with a survey to update some details. Asked age bracket, if owner or mortgage home, combine family income. Fairly standard q’s. Then asked for my first name as said she had my last name. I said how is it relevant & she got a bit cranky said they needed it. When I queried again why she hung up. Forgot to block number. Just seen they have tried calling again on Fri & today Mon. Someone dodgy. Out of interest has anyone else been involved the Medibank data breach? Maybe that’s where they got our numbers???

Asked me if I was between a certain age group. After I answered no they hung up.

When l called back it said the number was not connected.

I used to occasionally answer incoming calls from unknown numbers some years ago, thinking it might be from someone do something important, but most of these calls were usually from scammers trying to get money from you, or get your personal details to try conning or exploiting you for money! Another method they would exploit, was to use your personal information to get access to your accounts or, to act as an imposter, to get money or goods in your name, by settling up an account with your details and order products online! Sometimes they would use fear tactics, to try and pressure or intimidate you, by claiming they were from the Government, VicRoads, Tax Department or some regulatory body, claiming that you owed them money, or or had committed some non-existant offence and must pay up immediately or be prosecuted etc., but I knew immediately that it was complete rubbish and was totally fake, so I never revealed my name or any personal details ever!!! I would sometimes allow them to spin their lies and toy with them and catch them out with their lies and stupidity like many other people do. Nowadays though, I don’t generally waste my time with them much anymore, except on rare occasions. I usually follow the rule that if it’s an unknown number NOT listed in my phone directory, I just cancel or reject the call! Sometimes if they call with the same number persistently, I’ll then block that number for a while until they stop calling and move on! These days though they usually either call and hang up immediately, even if you do answer it, or they send an intimidating or annoying text. sometimes they leave a call back number or message, or some fake link they stupidly expect you use! I NEVER trust any of their info, messages, never click on any of their links, which is always a major risk!
If I think it could be from a legitimate company, genuine person or some real organisation, I never use the details they gave, but always go back to the original source contact details of the company or organisation online and cross check the details sent to me with the source details of the real Company first and contact the true company or organisation direct! It can occasionally become a bit more difficult though, when you have ordered a product from a legitimate company, or contacted an organisation representative about something and their trying to contact you or get back to you and you don’t know their contact details, so you’re not sure if it’s really from them or not, especially if you’re expecting a call from them, but you don’t have customer service contact info from them! Again it’s always best to try and track down the true source details first from them and don’t answer any unknown calls, texts or emails unless you’re absolutely certain it’s genuine! Even then, if you answer a call you think might be really from them, or someone you’re expecting to contact you, ask plenty of scrutinising questions, to verify their identity, before you reveal who you are! If they’re scammers or criminals etc. they’ll usually hang up pretty quickly, if you’re investigating them! Finally there are often many things that give them away and one of these can sometimes be, when they contact you multiple times with numerous phone numbers that are only slightly different, like they’ve done here with me! Sometimes though I’m just curious though, to find out the truth of their fake details and pathetic attempts to con people, through the experiences of others like you here! Don’t call them back or waste your time with them, unless you know what you’re doing and know what they’re up to! 👍
