An Australian (judging by accent) man named Benjamin Tangey called me and asked if I was the owner of my business (mentioned my business by name), which I am of course. Stated as being from the Neighbourhood Watch and working closely with the police to promote awareness of ice addiction in children as young as 12. Talked about their Streetsmart (might have been Streetwise) handbook and that I could donate $350 to have my business name put into the book as well as a little bio. I said yes as I genuinely thought it was legit at first as I am aware of this handbook that I recall receiving in school back in the day and thought it was a good initiative. He then emailed me (btangey @ cwa.carmacloud.com) an invoice for the donation as well as requiring that I sent back nothing but "I agree" to accept the process of donating.
This is where I got concerned, however, as although the email had links to legitimate sites and whatnot, his actual email address seemed odd and the structure of the email appeared very amateur/unprofessional, containing a few spelling/grammar errors with the most notable being my address spelled incorrectly. Odd, I thought, as I imagine charities would have an auto-fill function when it comes to addresses so that human error is taken out of the equation. The next day, I get a call from a lovely older lady about the donation saying thank you so much, etc and trying to process the payment. After seeing the inconsistent responses here about the number she has called me on (three times now over the past 2 days) and seeing that my phone is labeling it as "Potential Fraud", I am quite shocked at the fairly elaborate nature of this scam; the man I spoke with was very down-to-earth and the woman seemed just like a kind admin lady doing her job.
Lesson learned for me: Don't do donations over the phone! I'll also be reporting my experience to the police so that they can hopefully bring this op down; although gullible, I'm only 25 and pretty switched on, so I fear for those who wouldn't think to suspect falling into this pretty clever trap.
Rang my mobile and said they were from the Neighbourhood Watch with the police and was I the business owner. I do not own a business... I rang once and got disconnected Caller: Young man. Affected way of speaking - exaggerated annunciation.
"hello, can I have just a minute of your time?" was how it started. Affected way of speaking - strange exaggerated annunciation.
Asked for "agreement" to put a 'Bronze' advert in a booklet to go with a Neighbourhood Watch and Police education program about drugs and sex education for schools.
I am generally concerned that any entity would be asking for funding from community groups or businesses for such a schools program instead of the Government. So I asked who was employing him for this canvassing. He said "the Publisher" of the booklet.
I said I can't make decisions on behalf of my community group and would have to take it to my group at next meeting and could he please send me an email about it as he's vague and not giving enough detail. eg. are you asking for money? how much is he seeking for the advert? "Three hundred for the bronze advert with logo support"
But he said something weird like "oh the formatting of the emails is really difficult". And said he just wanted agreement now and permission to call back later. Weird.

I'll let the Police / Neighbourhood Watch know.
And will resume my practice of not answering unfamiliar numbers.

Time wasters, hang up immediately and block number Rang and introduced himself as a member of the Australian Police & wanted to speak to the owner of the business. Hung up when I questioned him. Caller: Said his name was Con
Man saying his name was Con called. Said he was from Neighborhood Watch and wanted a donation. Mentioned my business name. I was unable to call the number back. This followed a strange incident the night before where a lady tried to watch me enter my PIN number when paying for a meal. She followed me out of the establishment and seemed to take a photo of my car registration.
