Caller: Supposedly Paypal I have had so many spam messages from this number it's ridiculous. I've ignored them all. The most I've done is gone onto Paypal itself and checked for alerts. Guess what: there were none. Reported as spam and blocked. Those of you desperately trying to convince the rest of us that it's a legit number? Shame on you.

Caller: A scammer? SMS message received at 1:45am - I can assure you I was asleep then so I was not trying to use my PayPal so I am quite sure it's a scam. "PayPal: XXXXX is your security code. It expires in 10 minutes. Don't share this code with anyone." The number on my phone came up as 0458 729 725.

Caller: 0458 729 725 This message from Paypal regarding the 045872..... scam number is absolutely correct. It's too bad other entities like Amazon Prime don't post a similar note regarding the massive number of scam calls supposedly coming from them in order to steal financial details.

Caller: Paypal I agree with previous comment, this is a valid Paypal number. I have received three text messages from this message, the first with a validation code while I was making an Ebay purchase, the second 1 minute after I submitted a case to Paypal's resolution centre informing me that Paypal had received my case, and the third just now with a validation code, however I have not made any purchase recently. So the third is vindication that Paypal's security checking is working as possibly someone has tried to use my Paypal account to purchase something and I received the validation code.

Found a post from a Moderator at PayPal's Community - seems that it is a bith of both "legitimate and fraudulent". Read below - but in short, don't click on any links that it sends and if you are ever in doubt, check your PayPal account via a fresh browser.
"Hi everyone,
I wanted to pop into this thread because there's been a lot of different information over the past few years. Our knowledge has been updated and clarification is needed.
PayPal uses a couple of different short SMS numbers for communication. However, as any number can be spoofed, it would be wise not to rely on the appearance of a specific number to confirm that a text message is legitimate. Since phone numbers are not permitted in the community for a variety of reasons, the SMS numbers have been removed from this thread. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.
If you receive an SMS asking you to reply with a 1 or 2 to confirm the legitimacy of the payment, it is likely from PayPal. However, responding is completely optional. If the transaction is not authorized, you can also go to your PayPal account and report unauthorized activity there. If you ever have any doubts, it's always safer to log in to your account from a fresh browser window at PayPal.com and get the lay of the land from there.
If a transaction is in fact legitimately authorized, it is not necessary to respond to confirm it for the transaction to go through. However, confirming the transaction is helpful to the system to recognize what authorized activity in your account looks like.
I hope this information helps. "

if you have chosen multi factor authentication when using PayPal, this is the number they use to send you your one time code to login with. it's legit.

Caller: Paypal 0458 729 725 I thought was a fraudulent number texting me.... BUT turns out it was actually paypal sending me texts each dodgy transaction!! I ignored them but I should have at least called paypal directly to confirm. I suggest calling paypal from their website and making sure it wasn't them first... if you saw my texts you would think they are fake too! I had $450 spent from my bank
