Just received the following:-
"This is a message on behalf of the police in your state or territory. The Social Research Centre will call you in the coming days to see if you can take part in an important study on safety and crime in your area. Reply '1' if you are 19+, '2' if you are under 18 or '3' to opt out."
A google search of the phone number does bring up the Social Research Centre website, but there does not appear to be any mention of this number within the website. What is also interesting is that this study is not mentioned under their list of current surveys.
I think the old "when in doubt, don't" applies in this instance.

Received an SMS regarding a survey on behalf of the police in relation to safety and crime. It also says that contact will be made by the Social Research Centre in the coming days. For once, it appears that this may actually be legitimate. A Google search of the number brings up the Social Research Centre website. This number is one of many listed as numbers that text messages may be sent from.

Caller: The Social Research Centre This is a message on behalf of the police in your state or territory. The Social Research Centre will call you in the coming days to see if you can take part in an important study on safety and crime in your area. Reply '1' if you are 18+,'2' if you are under 18 or '3' to opt out.
I looked up their website: https://www.srcentre.com.au and phoned their 1800 number. This is NOT a scam despite what some have written above. The research group is part of ANU (The Australian National University). Now we are at the stage that bonafide surveys are thought of as scams
