Someone called me from this number pretending to be the AFP. They claimed they had obtained a laptop containing my personal information, including my email, mobile number, and possibly bank and passport details. I was told to go to my local police station and cite a case number. They also sent me an SMS with an officers name, position, badge number, and case number.

I did not provide any information over the phone. The next day I went to my local police station, where it was confirmed that the entire thing was a scam. The SMS from the “police” — including the name, position, and case number — was also fake.

The police and I were somewhat perplexed about what the scammers’ end goal was, as they did not ask for any information during the call. It ended up being more of a time-waster than anything else. The call came from (03) 7056 7011.

The caller spoke clear, well-spoken English and did not sound like AI or a robotic voice.
