The calls come from a Sydney business called MIC or also known as "MakeItCheaper Energy Brokers" who want to "Find out if you're eligible for a carbon tax rebate" or something. I have had 8 phone-calls from them since yesterday on the business phone line, which I don't have time to talk on as we have a business to run and customers who want to get in contact with us, and each time I answered I asked them not to call back as I wasn't interested. One lady called me 3 times after constantly hanging up on her. I just called the Make it Cheaper phone number on their website and asked to be placed on the Do Not Call list. If they call again there will be trouble!

Thanks everyone, this was really helpful! Now I have a much better idea of whats going on. I've been getting missed calls for a while now. They left messages a couple of times just saying to call them back but not who they were. I answered a couple of days ago and couldnt understand the person so I hung up. Just had another missed call... Next time I'll answer it and tell them I'll report them for harrassment if they keep calling me. And you know, I think it was since I put my number into a site to buy a ringtone a while ago!

They caused our account to be transferred from my wifes name to my name and our previous account went to a collection agency. They stuffed my wifes credit rating because they presented themselves as Simply Energy. Block them.

Kept ringing me. I'd say no thanks and hang up. They kept ringing multiple tomes in a row trying to get me to do some electricity thing and said I'd won some competition. Highly rude and invasive and a total SCAM!

I received this phone call, but from (02) 8310 0121. The first person who spoke to me was English(british), then she put me onto another Australian woman.
I think I may have been scammed, because although initially I thought this was a scam, the second woman convinced me me she was a legitimate broker. However now after searching the web for information on this company, I can't find any (except for a company by this name in England) who ARE legitimate. Unfortunately, I told the woman my energy provider and address. I think this was a mistake. She told me my electricity rate, then told me I had a good deal, because the only one lower than me was .......
I said ok, and she was satisfied and hung up. I wonder what will happen now? I will be keeping an eye out in my letter box for unsoliced invoices.
If this is a scam they are very good - knowing when my next electricity read is, and what my rates are.....

I did a survey on the ABC wesbsite this morning putting me into a prize draw for my trouble. Then somehow to finish the registration it said to put my mobile in an receive a confirmation sms. Just text YES back so I do and end up subscribing to Trivia Club at $5.00 per message. So I immediately unsubscribed and this afternoon I get a call from (02) 9696 9995. go figure!!!

Liz. They don't necessarily 'have' your number. They use auto dialers that just call the next number in the sequence.
Regarding hangups. Again - Autodialers. They have an automated dialing system that just continuously dials. When you answer, it is passed to an available marketer. If there is no agent available, you will get a silent line or it will just drop the call.
I just got a call saying from MIC... "Are you still with Origin". I asked "How do you know I was with Origin?" She could not answer the question but responded "I don't. I am asking", but then asked same again. So did I. She eventually hung up :P
