This is what I believe is happening. 1. They have your Visa card number and have attempted to withdraw money from your account using a know site name. It could be 1 cent, as in my case, or more. 2.This generates an automatic text response from your Bank which asks you to reply "yes" if you approved it, or "No" if you did not approve it. This is a legitimate response. REPLY "NO." 3. In the text message the bank says they will call within the next 2 hours. 4. The scammer knows the system and calls you within minutes of you receiving the text. This is where the lies begin - they are not the bank. STOP. Tell them you will go to the bank and sort it out. Hang up.

Caller: Westpac Fraud department I called Westpac to report fraud on my card. Was on the phone to fraud division staff member when the call dropped out and the same staff member called back from (02) 9155 4596 number. The staff member cancelled the old card immediately while on the phone to me and issued a new card. I could see the activity occurring (cancellation of old card and new card) on my account as they made this change.

This number is the legit number for the Westpac / St George Fraud Dept. After speaking to a guy from this number who advised there was a suspicious transaction on my card and he would cancel my card and organize for a new one to be sent to me I immediately called the number on the back of my St George Card and confirmed that this was all legit and the St George representative confirmed that it was indeed all above board and she could see that I had been speaking to the guy (from this number) and that he had helped me out.

Caller: (02) 9155 4596 I have just discovered several fraudulent transactions overnight and this morning from MY SALES on two of my bank cards (debit and credit) with the same bank. Process as explained by Geoff here also took place (text notification, request to reply yes/no, confirmation a fraud agent will call in 2h and then this 02 .. number calls). Lucky this caller hung up as soon as I answered! I rang the bank this morning and they cancelled these cards. Three transactions that have gone through so far are just over $2000. Other two appx. $1500 were blocked. Interestingly, I had also received an email note from the bank to ask to confirm one of these transactions which I did NOT confirm or authorise. The email just disappeared from my inbox. Bank is telling me now they may not pay our money back, if our email was compromised as it is not considered a fraud and is a scam instead. Unfortunately, I also discovered that a purchase was attempted, again via MY SALES, on my AMEX card for $1600. This may possibly be an identity theft now which I have been investigating further.

This number called me about 20 minutes after I received a text message from Westpac saying my card had been blocked due to suspicious activity. It said type YES if I recognised the transaction or NO for someone to call me. I types yes & still got a call. Didn't answer it though. However, my card didn't work until I replied with YES to the text message. I've had this happen randomly numerous times in the last year.
