I called the number back - Link Marketing Services...presumably trying to notify me of upcoming share placements.

Answer the call people, it should be about shares that you already own or are about to own. They shouldn't be selling you anything, they're a share registry service.
It's possibly about some share scheme your employer had that you weren't aware of.

I rang another number about some shares I had, and they said they would get back to me. Today I received a message from this number about my enquiry. It is legit. The number they asked me to ring back on was different again, but the message was genuine.
