I received a prank call.  Hung up before I could answer.  Tried to call number back it is disconnected????

Since 16 Oct 2008 I have had 6 nuisance calls from this number, the latest one on 21 Oct. Except for one call where a male voice said, "hello" a few times, there was silence on the other end. Otherwise, the behaviour has been as indicated in comments above. In an attempt to avoid nuisance telemarketing calls, a few days ago I changed my number and am now paying extra to make it a silent number. But today I received a call from (02) 8090 2200 on my new silent number. So it looks like this number is making random computer-generated calls. From the first 4 digits (8090), it appears that the call is originating in the Sydney CBD area.At my request, my telephone provider has placed a trace on my phone and the trace detected this afternoon's call, but the provider says they must have traced the number five times before they can contact the caller and warn him to stop. The telephone provider will not tell you the nuisance caller's name.My suggestion is for everyone to request their phone provider to mount a trace on their phone, and follow up every time you get a nuisance call. Maybe this will enthuse the telephone companies to do something about it.The other thing I'm doing is threatening to cancel my fixed line and ADSL services and just use my mobile services for everything.

I have just had a call from (02) 8090 2200 i said hello and know answer
if i listened carfully it sounded like a phone call center
what gets me is that when i did a seach on the web for the phone number there is heeps of hits saying the same thing and the phone carriers don't disconect it. If you or i called as may people your phone would disconected.

I receive these calls all the time. It drives me nuts as I am at home during the day on maternity leave and they wake the baby. I have caller ID and it sounds like a fax machine. Never got a person.  Some times it is a private number others times (02) 8090 2200.  Can anyone help?

Just had a call from this number. Heavily accented man, who knew my last name.
Said something about which telephone account I have and that they were testing the lines (or something). I hung up.
I reported it to Telstra, just in case I'm getting charged for this call.
Didn't give out any personal details thank goodness!!

I answer, announce myself.
He says nothing - I have answered faster than he expected, so all I hear is breathing.
I say "SPEAK!"
Indian-accented English then flows freely, telling me that I am the purchaser of cartridge refills for copiers and printers.
I say "DO NOT CALL MY NUMBER AGAIN! I AM ON THE DO-NOT-CA ...."
He hangs up before I finish my sentence. Mate, it's totally non-productive. I guarantee you I will never buy your product, I will just shout at you.
