This number is in a scam email purported to be from Ebay saying I had purchased something.

This is a scam.Their unsolicited call claims to be from a PC support company responding to reports of problems with your PC due to internet usage.They want you to give them remote access to your PC to 'fix' it.See --> http://techmysupport.blogspot.com/

Received a call from a strongly Indian/Sri Lankan accented man who gave his name as Alex Peterson, who said he's from the 'technical department of windows' at 20 George Street Hornsby, tel (02) 8005 1526. He wanted to check my computer for problems, which he said if it didn't have at present, it soon would have (!) I have no problems at all.

He firstly asked if I had a windows computer (curiously, after saying he called because the other arm of his company had given him my details as a windows computer owner) and he wanted me to sit at my computer while he confirmed the 'customer licence number' of it.

I insisted on his details, as above, which enabled me to do this check at "who calls me", that has confirmed my suspicion of a probable scam.

I just got a call from this number seconds ago, I told then I didnt have a conputer he then went on to quote me my name and addresss , i said Id call him back ,he gave his name as John Wilkens from Technical support George St Sydney, Indian or Sir lankan at a guess. surley with todays tecnolgy these people can be traced

what could this have done to my computer
