Quite a worrying call if you haven't put yr tax return in for a couple of years like me! But its clearly a fraud as,
(1) they don't mention your name
(2) they don't give their own name
(3) they don't communicate with you even if you answer the phone!
They just demand you phone this number (02) 6152 8624) about "urgent legal action that the Australian Taxation Office is taking against you" - without even saying who "you" are! My bet is that if you call the number back they'll start asking you for "identification" details (name, date of birth, Tax File Number, etc) which will enable them to steal your identity. And if your gullible enough to give them that info, then they'll probably tell you how you can pay a small fine (on credit card, of course) to finalize the matter easily. Then BANG ... they've got both your ID and your Credit Card Account. This is likely to be a big, nasty, successful scam while it lasts.

Caller claimed to be from ATO Canberra re fraud by me. I did not ring back.

My sister had this call and has distressed her so much that it was difficult for her to understand it was a scam. They told her that her house and phone was under surveillance and that she could make this problem all go as away if she paid the "ATO" $5000. These people are scum, if they don't have any of your details then how is it possible you are under surveillance! Now just trying to undo the emotional damage they have caused my sister

A JERK called me telling me I've been using his wifi. Funny cos the number is a 02 and I'm not from Sydney so I hanged up and blocked the JERK. Hope he gets cancer and coronavirus at the same time

Absolute SCAM. (02) 6152 8624 is a terrible low life scam. These criminals should go to jail. We need better cyber crime laws. I get at least 1 scam a week not on my mobile but on the home phone. They obviously pick numbers randomly. Or have a giant who can we scam book. LOL

Had the same demanding message - didn't bother ringing back -thought I would check the website and sure enough scam. Could be frightening for older people.

Parents recieved the same call today. Absolutely clearly a scam.

got this on my answering machine today and felt very worried wondering what the hell I had done that could get a call re this. I then thought they hadn't used my name so it may be a wrong number and I tried the old to ring back press 22 but it didn't work as it said it was private. I looked up the number and it showed as private so I thought that's strange so I came on here to see if the number he left came up and hey presto. This is bloody criminal and it should be stopped by Telstra or the police

Same as above, claiming to be from Taxation Office and had a claim against us from AGL. Said we needed to ring back immediately or get our "district attorney" to ring back in a computer generated american voice. Clearly a scam.

I called the number back because I'm an idiot. Took about 6 calls but I finally got through and this guy with a really thick Indian accent said something about the ATO then mumbled some stuff and hung up on me.

Yes I received the same msg on my home phone I rang back and didn't even get a dial tone. Was definately a scam do not ring these people or hand over any money what so ever. Scumbags!

Very upsetting, have learnt to check numbers before I call back. Said I was going to be arrested in the morning and that he would be personally taking on my case and making sure I went to jail - as he didn't like the way I was speaking to him... When you realise it is a scam - well, how dare they.... Not sure what they were after, didn't ask me for any personal details, but talked with me for ages... I upset him so much he had to terminate the call!!!

Recieved message re tax fraud. Scam, but tried to call back anyway. Would like to speak to these people.

same as above, left message, the giveaway I suppose is that they ask you or your attorney to call back, who uses the word attorney in australia??????

American accent claiming be

I had a harrowing phone call from this number, I was on the phone for an hour. I am so stupid and am so upset and humiliated that I took this call, and BELIEVED IT. PLEASE do not take or return calls from this number. It is a hoax/scam, I can't even fathom that I got sucked into this in the first place. I am so embarrassed I let this happen.
