Just received a call from a man purporting to be from the ATO. He phoned from (02) 5133 5338 and gave his name as David Lucas, id no 1193.
He said that I am due a refund of $5,100 from the ATO and that I should have received a letter about this from the ATO a month ago. When I said it was not possible that I was due a refund, as I hadn't paid that much tax last year, he said it was not a rebate of tax paid last year but a refund based upon an accumulation over several years. I said, 'So, you will need my bank details then, but he said no, I needed to call the ATO financial accounting office in Canberra to obtain the money. He provided a tel no: (02) 5133 5606.
I asked if they would want my bank details and he said no, so I asked how they could transfer the money and he said it would be my option - either by bank transfer or cheque.
He urged me to call asap as they will be closing soon for Christmas.
I am sure that this is a scam and have not called the number.
He has just called a second time (ten minutes after his first call) and said that he has passed my file to the head office and I should phone for the refund and they will help me out.
