Text message with the usual scam
“ Hi mum my old number is not longer available can you save this number? You can delete it. Can you let me know when you received this message”
What eventually follows after a series of generic short messages is the inevitable try for $$
“ I don’t want to bother you with it but the bank blocked my online banking for 48 hours due to this new number. I’ve got to make some payments so that’s stressing me out”
Then
“ Are you able to help me out by making a payment for me?”
It’s obviously a spoofed number as ‘0482’ prefix codes aren’t used here in Oz, just block it anyway from the get go. I was bored so I played along for a week before finally managing to get a bank acct number from them (they tried hard to get gift cards instead) to transfer money into (it was an Australian bank account) which I was able to pass on to ACCC.
