Asked how I was today, I responded "I'm good thanks" and she hung up. This number will be added to my long list of "Do Not Answer" numbers.

Answered a call that showed this number as the caller ID. My "hello" was met with a several second silence followed by disconnection. I've been receiving an increasing number of this type of call from mobile phone numbers I'm not familiar with, so I decided to return the call, but using the 1831 prefix to hide my line ID. I received an Optus recorded message that the number was disconnected. Went back through my home phone's list of calling numbers and found a previous mobile number that I thought had behaved similarly and did the same thing ie dialled 1831 followed by the mystery mobile number. Sure enough received a message that the number was unavailable. I have a sneaking suspicion that these numbers are associated with some form of polling service that has previously used fixed line numbers to determine if the called subscriber is at home at the time of the call, hence the reason there is no response; if you've answered the call they've got the info they require. I think the reason mobile numbers are now being spoofed/ghosted is that it's more likely you will let a call from a fixed line number you are unfamiliar with go to the answering machine which gives no valid info to the polling company as opposed to receiving a call from an unknown mobile number which you are more likely to answer. The latter gives valid info to the polling company. I guess, from now on, I won't be answering ANY numbers I'm not familiar with. Amazing how enterprise and the free irresponsible market place seem to ultimately always screw the life out of everything they touch; the internet and the phone system as great examples. Isn't it time unsolicited phone calls from Australian registered businesses be made illegal just like it's illegal for Australian businesses to send unsolicited emails from .au email domain names? Doesn't the same principle apply?
