Just got a call from this number, sounded like a recorded message in Chinese. I had no idea what they were saying - I feel like such a disappointment to my parents.

They're scammers. They've already tried to scam my colleague. It appears they were, at first, attempting to scam Chinese Australians but now they're out for anyone to fall for it. In fact, I believe they have been able to scam millions of Australian dollars. Be careful. If you get a voicemail with a lady saying she is from DHL China or something similar in mandarin, avoid at all costs. If you believe you do have a package in China that needs tending to, hang up and call the appropriate courier. That way you'll know for sure you are talking to the right people.

Caller: I don't really know I just got a call this evening, it came from Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. I didn't answer the phone call but received a voicemail in Chinese with some English speech (these voicemails never had English speech before but it's very muffled and unclear...). In the English speech, they said something like my Visa is cancelled or something though I am an Australian citizen and it's a scam so don't fall for it!!

Got a call from this number at 6.15 pm. After picking up, only could listen to an automated voice in English first, then Mandarin. High suss of a scam, I have been getting calls like this nearly once every 1 or 2 days... I googled and funny that this number is listed as an Chinese visa application centre in Sydney. Still feeling so sick of it, who would call at 6.15pm for visa matters, dialed 9 to speak to someone and asked them to F off.

Called at 3.30pm on SUNDAY 29 April 2018. - NSW Police issued this warning today: New telephone phishing scam targeting Mandarin speakers
The scam starts with a message in Mandarin from the criminals stating they are from the Chinese Embassy or a courier company such as DHL. The scammer explains that the person is being investigated for illegal activity, usually relating to their passport and if they don’t comply they will be arrested and deported. If you receive an unsolicited call, it’s best to hang up, research the claims, look the organisation up, and call them back on the legitimate number found on a reliable website to verify. Please remember organisations shouldn’t call you and then ask you to prove yourself. If you have received one of these calls please call IDCARE for assistance 1300 432 273.
