Caller: Immigration department
Person: Dexter Thompson
Mood: annoyed
Caller: Dexter Thompson from the Immigration department

A male with an accent from the immigration department, going by the name of Dexter Thompson ID number AR766148 called me on public holiday because this is an urgent matter. He said a vodafone number starting 0405 that is registered under my name has been sending a lot of spam messages about visa application and a lot of complaints have been made about that number and so he is calling up to investigate it since I did not respond to the two emails that were sent to me. Advised him I did not receive those emails. He advised me the number was registered at a vodafone branch at Guangzhou Baiyun airport and he is concerned that I am the victim of identity theft, and he advised me to call the police in Guangzhou to ask them to investigate and have my name cleared. I said I do not see why it is my responsibility to contact the Chinese officials nor would my call carry any credibility, and that should be the government's responsibility to deal with that. He later came back, after speaking to his supervisor, that a special line will be made because of the urgency of the situation. I said I don't speak Mandarin and he said he unfortunately has no interpreter available because it is a public holiday and he asked if I have anyone on my side that is able to interpret. I commented that I would expect the Australian government to be better resourced than this and he reasoned it is the public holiday. And then I heard some giggling in the background and I confronted him about it, and he said it was his colleague who has been on the phone with her boyfriend. To that I commented that is not very professional and he said he will call back in a few days when they have organised an interpreter, and I told him I will need a lot of evidence to confirm the legitimacy of the call, and he hanged up on me at that.

Claimed to be ABF, that I am sending illegal text message on a mobile phone number 0405xxx591, which I have no idea. He claimed that it is under my name with vodafone. I told the caller to get the AFP to talk to me if I am under investigation. and I hanged up.

Mandarin speaking guy who already knew my last name and asked if it was a good time to talk. They claimed to be from the Australian Immigration Office and said they received complaints about a phone number (gave me a different AU number) involved in illegal activity. They told me the number was registered under my name, with my current number listed as a secondary contact. The caller then asked if I had signed a Vodafone contract on 16 April 2025 or shared my personal details with anyone recently.

They claimed the IP address linked to the registration was traced to Guangzhou, China and asked whether I was currently in Australia or China and if I have family in China who has my details. He provided his full name, work ID, and case number, and told me to report the issue to local Chinese police due to a supposed data leak in China. He then offered to transfer me to the “local Chinese police department.” I hung up, but they’ve been calling me non-stop since.

23/04/2025 at 16:50 received a call from this number, a mandarin male speaker (not very fluent) just pretended to be a worker from the immigration office, saying a number ended as 739 is sending scam messages to other people about visa application etc., I said it's not my number and if you are working for the immigration office you should be able to send me an email, and he said he can't. I hung up and he called me 4 times afterwards. Idiot.
Definitely a fraud, should be using some tools to fake this number. Just writing this comment to let you know they're still doing this.

Today, just few minutes ago, found missing calls twice from this same number of (02) 6196 0196, after using google searching, and says this is a number from Australia Government Home and Affair, but it is very RARE to me. So, need to be careful to pick-up any call from now even a call number appears as a truely of Australia number.

Called 4 times on a Saturday. I googled the number and it said was from global service centre for department of visa, immigration etc. answered the 4th time they called, mandarin speaking guy asked if I was such and such, asked if I spoke Chinese, when I said no, he hung up. Scam call. So many red flags. Saturday call, non English speaking caller claiming to be from department of immigration, kept asking if you speak Chinese, hangs up on you when you say no. Don’t pick up.

Indian accent guy called me from this number saying I ordered parcel with full of sugar, and other drugs and that package is held on the border.
They knew my full details, email and old address that I lived in 3 years ago.
I asked him to wrap up everything and send it to my email and he said He can’t..(?) That’s what Government usually does. Also, in the Australia law they cannot record any voice call without the permission from us.
From start to the end, piece of sh*t and They don’t even know what immigration department is about. SCAM SCAM SCAM

Caller: Someone with a Filipino accent saying they are from the Australian Border Force

They asked me if Iam (my real name) saying they have a package in my name from China. I told her its a scam. She said it's not, and the call is being recorded. She called me again, and I didn't pick up. I'm reluctant to pick up any landline calls now. So full of it. I think they pick on me as I have an Asian surname. So worrying. Some of the posts here sound very familar.
