rang me 11pm twice .i could not return call

Number called my landline twice , first time around 9.30pm and again about 9.45pm.
Each time the phone rang only for a short time, before the caller hung up.
Of course there was no message left.
I tried calling the number from a non displayed private phone but recorded message said to check the number before calling again.
