Called this number as it said it belonged to Microsoft Windows when my laptop was compromised last Wednesday when I had clicked to read an article on Facebook. The guy at the end of this number managed to gain access to my laptop and then proceeded to ask for $4000 to be transferred via Western Union to someone in Vietnam. I made an excuse and cut the call. I was then called over a dozen times from various mobile numbers. My laptop is now with an IT Technician who is disabling any threats and viruses that was installed when I clicked on the article. Beware of this number but I think the Australian Government needs to take responsibility and action against these Australian free call numbers being used by scammers!

Beware of this number. Message received on computer purporting to be from Microsoft and advising computer had been locked and any attempt to close down without contacting this number would result in all data being lost. DO NOT RING THIS NUMBER IT IS A SCAM. Regardless of the message, which has a loud and insistent voice aspect, I was able to safely close the computer down and this cleared the message. BE WARNED, DO NOT CALL THIS NUMBER.

Caller: Scammer from India

I opened a link to a news article on Facebook and a screen came up saying I had been the victim of a cyber-attack and to call 1800 298 430 which was allegedly a Microsoft Windows Support. A guy with an Indian accent gained remote access to control my laptop and told me he did a "diagnostic" data said 60 people were connected to my laptop and there had been 1100 attempts to access the laptop. He then requested $999.00 be paid so he could put the anti-virus on the laptop describing it as a lifetime protection for all devices in the house which included the smart TV. I proceeded with the payment which was initially rejected by credit card. He then asked if I had another card which I did and used my debit card which was also rejected. However I (stupidly) authorised the payment through PayPal as he was so convincing. He then asked me not to touch the laptop for 30 mins. I could see him working my laptop remotely and became suspicious and looked up the number on my phone to discover 1800 298 430 is a well-known and reported scam number alleging to be Microsoft Support. I immediately shut the laptop down. Then the phone started ringing including from Kenya which I did not pick up. The phone numbers were +254 399631191, +254 389953351, +32 470885647, +254 324667246 and +254321677612. I reported to PayPal, went to the ANZ bank to report the scam and they deleted my cards and reported to the ANZ Fraud Squad and I took my laptop to the computer shop to be cleaned. The PayPal Invoice reads: Anup Vishwakarma, jsmithanup @ gmail.com HNo-61 A,Shivaje Road,Sayal, Vill-Sayal South,PS- Bhurkunda, Ramgarh, Jharkhand, 829118 INDIA. I attended my bank in person to report the scam and they immediately shutdown my accounts. Also reported to SCAMWATCH https://portal.scamwatch.gov.au/report-a-scam/; Australian Cyber Security https://www.cyber.gov.au/report-and-recover/report; Microsoft https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/topic/avoid-and-report-microsoft-technical-support-scams-392515fa-c630-b41d-2039-a637d5eaaec2 and Paypal. My laptop is now with a computer shop being cleaned. I was advised by them to just press the "ESC" button if a "cyber-attack" ever happens again which will shut the screen down when the scammer has remote access.

Indian claiming to be from microsoft. Number popped up when my mother in law was on facebook. It said she had a virus on her computer & to call this number. She called & these scammers conned her into giving access to her computer. They have stolen the data from her computer within half an hour & currently trying to hack into her bank accounts. Currently cancelling all her bank cards & changing all her passwords.

Caller: DO NOT CALL THIS NUMBER

After clicking on a website the screen locked then flashed saying I had been part of a cyber attack… asked me to immediately call the number 1800 298 430 and I spoke to a chap in India although he then said he was in Canberra.
He said that bit was a problem that’ lots of people encounter and that he could help to fix it. He then asked me to restart my computer after asking if it was a personal or business computer. He then took control of the computer remotely and it was then I thought mmm I’ll check to see if the number I had called was dodgy…. I read the above comments and immediately switched off my machine. Before I switched off he could tell I was trying to take back control and urged me not to that he was trying to help. I’ve since received 9 phone calls from a private number and one from (03) 7042 9257.
Do not trust these guys!!

Caller: i called this number 1800 298 430

I called this number today when my HP laptop was compromised because the number shown said the computer needed attention due to Microsoft Windows security. I had clicked something on Facebook to read. When I rang the number there was loud boppy music playing and finally a man with a distinct Indian accent answered. He seemed sincere in wanting to assist and asked for details to access my computer. He said my computer would have many hackers who will steal my identity. I continued questioning him and he responded if I didn't trust him to take my computer to a store for the staff to check. Then he abruptly hung up!
