Watch out. This is a sophisticated scam. It's not a random message. They actually know the last four digits of my debit card and they have informed me that the card ending in those numbers was successfully removed from Google Pay. Then they list this 1800 number as the contact number for more information.
I'm sure that if you call it, they will ask you to identify yourself, and then they will have everything they need to use your card or take your identity.
Beware.

Treat with extreme caution. Best option is to call Suncorp direct.

I was notified that my Visa Debit card had been removed from Google Pay and to call 1800 290 869. I'm even suspicious that some of the comments here are not genuine as they say the number is Apple, while I use Android. Also, my Visa card is not about to expire. I also did not receive an email.

When I called Suncorp in Brisbane on their published number 13 11 55 even they weren't sure! However, their guess was that it was referencing an old phone (replaced about 6 months ago) that contained a "token" that had now expired - same Visa card but different virtual card number. They also could not confirm whose phone number it was!

Short answer: Don't trust the SMS, don't trust the messages here (sorry, guys), just call Suncorp to clarify. (If it's genuine and they get enough calls they might make their messages a bit clearer or use a phone number we all recognize!)

Hope that helps someone.

Ok so, a few conflicting reports here, I think I've gotten to the bottom of it. Long story short: it's real, but also Suncorp are a bit sh*t.

Long version: got the SMS and email telling me the card had been removed from Google Pay, forwarded it to Suncorp security, phoned Suncorp via the number on their website. On the phone they said there's no activity on the account from us, so I requested a new card.

A little later Suncorp's Threat Management Team emails me back and says, among other things, "We have analysed this email and determined it to be legitimate. If you didn't not make this change, please contact the our support team on 1800 290 869."

So. The messages are 'real' (although obviously sent in error as I didn't remove the card), the phone number is real, and Google has one of those "left hand not talking to the right hand" situations.

Still. Good to know we're not being scammed, I guess.

The message from Suncorp is real, the 1800 number is for Apple Pay. I called Suncorp to confirm. As my card was expiring next month Suncorp activate the new card with Apple before it expires so there are no payment issues. Check to see if you have a card expiring next month.

Text received saying my card has been removed from Google pay and to call 1800 290 869. Very concerning as the card number was mine.

Absolutely has to be a scam. I'm in Europe using a UK Sim which I don't even know the number for, although my wife who is with me does. No way would Suncorp know my number.

IM PRETTY SURE THIS WAS A SCAM
I called up suncorp's public number (after almost giving out my details to the 1800 from the email) and they confirmed my google pay was all good... Don't believe the positive reviews in this list!!!!

Two texts both quoting last 4 digits of 2 different debit cards, one of which has never been used. Both texts from Suncorp state "card ending in #### linked to virtual account #### was successfully removed from Google Pay. For more information contact 1800 290 869." Only clue is that each text gives wrong virtual account numbers. Using burner phone called the number and the automated response sounded legitimate with exact wording of Suncorp but didn't provide a number menu before a person answered. They used the exact Suncorp script, gave their name, and asked for my date of birth all exactly as Suncorp does. When I refused and said I was going to contact the usual SC number they just said to do that. It sounded extremely legitimate. I hung up and called SC on the advertised number. They checked and assured that they had not sent any texts. They also said that as it it was related to Google Pay that the text would never have come from SC as that is entirely controlled by GP. I'm assuming phishing but am still concerned at how legitimate it all seemed. Watchful waiting to see what happens.

Scam? doubtful, the operator had historical knowledge of phone models/devices had activated google pay, and that the removal from google pay in my instance was an expiration of the security token associated with the app.

This is GENUINE, it is NOT a scam. I received the SMS and then an email from Suncorp, and yes, both came from Suncorp. I phoned Suncorp on their main 131155 number, and went through to card enquiries, confirming that it is NOT a scam. This occurs when Google removes one of the several tokens that they use for Google Wallet, which could be due to an upgrade of terms or many other reasons. In my case the Suncorp card remained active in Google Wallet.

This is a legitimate text message from Suncorp Bank. I called them on their corporate contact number and they confirmed all details in the message to be true, the text message is a system generated message and is legitimate.

I don't own an apple and haven't for over 5 years or more, but got this same text and email. Went into my google pay account and the cards are still listed there.

Elaborate scam that sends a text and e-mail quoting the last 4 digits of card. Text was in my stream of messages received from Suncorp previously advising my card had been removed from Apple Pay and to call 1800 290 869....It wasn't as I could still see it there. Called Suncorp on their REAL number and was advised there have been a lot of calls about this especially this week. It is most defs a SCAM and to ignore both the text and e-mail as there is NO unauthorised activity on my account.....DO NOT CALL THE 1800 NUMBER

UPDATE to my last comment saying to call Suncorp direct:

I have subsequently received an email which does appear to be from Suncorp and with what appears to be valid links.

It's a pity that Suncorp didn't seem to know about it and had to guess what the SMS was about.

I stand by my last recommendation - call Suncorp direct using the number on their web site. Hopefully they will make their messages clearer in the future and/or their fraud team will instantly know if it is genuine or not, and not have to guess!

Make sure you’re checking contact numbers for businesses before calling, a scam but smart.

It is a legitimate number and its to do with google pay and apple pay. Even after calling my bank and getting new card. The bank reattached it to apple pay and I got a confirmation text with the same number. Dont freak out its not a scam. Still better to call your bank directly though

It is undoubtedly a SCAM and they provide all the info and background to convince otherwise-----NEVER reply to this number or associated emails, but contact the firm you are dealing with on their advertised public number.

I got a text saying my card had been reissued and my Apple Pay activated, for more information call 1800 290 869.
The bank did not text me and this number is not theirs, if I had made contact and answered all the security questions I would have made a big mistake. Don’t call the number above and don’t give your details, your account is okay, you can call the legitimate Suncorp phone number and check!
