Love the way people say it is a scam number, however not bothered to check.
It is on the ATO website under the contact us area.
If they are trying to contact you it's because you have not done the right thing.
If you are suspicious of a caller, hang up and verify the number from their website and call it yourself.

I called 131142 and followed the prompts to speak to the ATO about a debt. I had the option of getting a call back or waiting the 18MIN and I chose to wait. When my call was answered I spoke with an indian person (which is 100% fine and OK) who was difficult to understand (again 100% fine and normal) and this person started asking me standard questions to identify myself but then started asking me who I bank with and if I get paid interest and things that seemed very odd. I got suspicious when they said they have to confirm who I am and I replied I need to confirm who they are and there was silence. I asked them to tell me the ABN for my company as I had given them my personal TFN and they should be able to look it up. And the call was terminated by them. Extremely suspicious and I'm wondering if the number is legit but they can somehow intercept it?

got a letter from the tax office demanding my dad (a pensioner) file a tax return, this number was on the letter. tried to call them but the call times out. they called back the next day and it was a moving company, very suspicious

Said they needed to confirmed my details before they could tell me why they were calling, when I said I would not confirm any private details until they could prove to me who they really were they said they couldn't until I proved who I was, stalemate
Gave me this number and said to call back?
We use an accountant so they should be going through them with any enquiries

i recicieved a letter from ato of a dept on letter the number was 131142 i called it was Australian Taxation office i payed alot of money now worried if it was the ATO.

Has anyone been receiving scam letters claiming from ATO with the tax payers name and address. Anyway, the letter starts off "To Whom it may concern" Your overdue statements are listed in this letter. If you have lodged recently you do not need to do anything further. Ignoring this letter could lead to prosecution. You now face potential prosecution and audit . And the letter keeps going with other crap. These con artists are making every effort to defraud people they believe they can fool out of their money.

This IS a genuine ATO number, set up for YOU to ring THEM. I do not believe you will ever receive a call from the ATO using this number. If you do, it's a scam.

This is a legitimate call no for the ATO, but I doubt it will show up on a call the ATO makes to 'you'.
It seems scammers now have the technology to select change the number that calls appear to come from.
If you are contacted from this number, hang up.

You are wrong... recommend checking your ATO record ASAP if you haven't already - the GIC will get you! Maybe consider a better accountant while you're at it, yours clearly isn't on top of your affairs

Guys THIS IS THE OFFICIAL DEBT LINE FOR THE ATO. Anyone saying otherwise is being lazy and not doing their due diligence.

If you receive a call from this number, they will ask you to verify some information to ensure they are speaking to the correct person - understandably with all the scams you may not want to do this - in that case, simply ask for a reference number, look up the official ATO number on the ATO website, and call back.

Speaking from experience, many accountants are not that good at staying up to date with their client's accounts and communications with the ATO, or may assume their clients are already aware of a debt. If the ATO calls advising of a debt, or you receive a letter with this phone number, and you use an accountant - TALK TO THEM! Get them to *actually* check your tax record out - or just talk to the ATO directly, or check on myGov. If you stick your head in the sand and just hope its a scam, you're gonna have a bad time.

You also have to advise the ATO if you're no longer working and have no requirement to lodge - the ATO does not know if you have earned self employment income, etc, until you advise them you either have or have not.

This comes as private number looking for my husband saying call from ATO AND pretend to give me a reference number to call back, tax agent advised if any matter ATO should contact them first ,so be carefull if they gave you this number to call back it lookes like these guy trying to get you more personal details

We received what looked like a legitimate letter from Australian Government Taxation Office saying we owed them $500.00. We use an accountant who handles our finances. BE VERY WARY - THIS IS A SCAM LETTER ADDRESSED TO OUR PRIVATE HOUSE. DO NOT BELIEVE THE COMMENTS BELOW SAYING THEY ARE LEGITIMATE. The phone number is also not legitimate.

Scam to get money using ATO fraud

They didn't ring me but sent me a letter with the 131142 number saying I needed to ring them about a late lodgement. I haven't worked in a 11yrs and when I rang the was very quiet not professional at all
