Received call 10:52am. My smartphone warned "Likely spam." I answered with the words, "Hello scammer. What are you trying to con me into this time?" After about a two second pause, they hung up without a word. About five minutes later, I called back, and was answered with "Is this ....." [they knew my correct first name and surname] and after a fleetingly defensive word of "Not scam!!" she proceeded to launch into a clearly scripted spiel about gold investment. At this point I hung up.
Points of interest:-
* They knew my name and could not have got it from the "White Pages," since (i) my mobile number is not listed, and (ii) only my surname and initials appear with my presently inactive landline number; scammers calling on that have never known more;
* The CID number did indeed reach the person(s) who called me; most often I receive a "number not in service" message. Occasionally, if the number they have spoofed DOES happen to be in service, I like to warn the legitimate holder that it is being misused in this way, and suggest that they ask their service provider to investigate.
* Judging by the warning on my smartphone, the number in question has presumably been reported for spam calls by others; I tend to be reluctant to block such numbers since many of them are spoofed and the callers have LONG lists of MANY numbers to which they randomly set their outgoing CID info.
