It was a cold cloudy windy day in down town Sydney... This number showed up on my landline phone in between the emails I was typing. I reached for the receiver, not sparing it a second thought at first. It all felt so natural as as I've been doing so my whole career. Then, right before i picked up an ominous feeling hit me out of nowhere. I realised this call was going to be more than just a call. The moment I hesitated to pick up I earned more than a single glance from some co-workers wondering why I delayed. I realised their stares and quickly went all in, picked up the receiver and almost fumbled my well practised greeting. In those three seconds after no response was heard. Just an endless silence. Silence so thick it made me question everything. Then, they hung up and I was pulled out of the deep black hole i was floating and thrown right back into reality. Everything's back as it was. I just don't feel like the same person any longer. Whoever or whatever it was, I hope they don't call back. Please let me work in peace in my own closed off space.
