Caller: cheryl bridge I responded to a private rental advertisement for a 3-bedroom property on Berry St, Cronulla NSW 2230. The person claimed to be the owner and communicated via email. They applied urgency and repeatedly requested a holding deposit to be paid before any in-person inspection.
They said they were not in town, offered to provide ID, suggested their son would meet me at the property, and asked me to sign a lease and pay a refundable $500 holding deposit prior to inspection. When I clearly refused to pay any money or sign anything before viewing the property in person, communication stopped immediately.
No money was paid. Based on the request for payment before inspection, third-party involvement, pressure tactics, and sudden cessation of contact, this appears to be a rental scam.
