Caller: 0480 005 351 Unamed foreign man said he was calling from my electrical provider because charges were increasing. He was unable to clearly state the name of my household supplier and fudged a few names hoping I'd give up asking before I suggested he was trying to scam me. He became very hostile so I hung up before any abuse might start.

Caller: Energy Organisation Caller said she was ringing to advise of an electricity price increase. Cost comparators called Energy Organisation. She knew my first name. I asked how she had my number because it is silent, she said she would ask her manager and call me back and hung up.

Strangely, he said he was calling from a company that I actually used to work for. I can’t remember now but I think he also knew my name. So name, number and work history. I told him “not interested” and hung up. But in-nerves all the same. Hoping the call centre is in Mumbai and they aren’t watching through my kitchen window. Creeps…

Caller: Scammer It’s a scammer 100%. Chances are they are calling from Mumbai, India, despite the phone number being Australian. Read more to find out how and why.
They electronically spoof this phone number, which is same as writing someone else’s name/address on the back of a letter you sent someone. The calls are not actually coming from someone that owns the phone number so there’s no point complaining to the Carrier or a person that owns that phone number. The carrier will usually just say we never issued that phone number to anyone.
Scammers use the call to detect if your mobile number is operational. If your mobile number is operation then it will get targeted, usually from land lines a bit later.
these days scammers prefer to use landlines for the actual targeting calls because who is going to believe Amazon or whoever it is or your bank is going to be calling you from a mobile.
They use a mobile number at this stage because If you have multiple calls from landline numbers, you get suspicious of landlines.
If you don’t pick up one of those landline calls then you’ll get a call from a different state STD area code.
The two states they are using at the moment are, Victoria and New South Wales, spoofing these area codes figuring that if you don’t pick up Victoria, you could be in New South Wales, obviously most of the people in Australia are split between those two states.
Please be aware that even if the phone number appears to be coming direct from your bank, do not trust it. The only phone number where you can trust the number showing on your screen is actually an outgoing call that you have dialed.
if a scammer calls you or any call coming in calls you and you want to discuss anything financial or personal, do not. If you want to check if it’s genuine, directly call the tax office, Amazon, your bank fraud department etc and ask.
