Caller: Scammers in India pretending to be from the Australian Government. Scammers from India have called me every day this week on this number. As of yesterday, they began phoning 4 times a day. The number they use is an Australian mobile number that is being used to bounce the calls from India - to give the impression they're local. I have traced the number to Canberra where the legitimate initiative was created... it's just that you can hear the exchange click over to an international call center. I spoke with 4 different persons from this number today. They claim to be part of the Australian government's LED subsidized grant replacement initiative. The problem is that they hang up when I tell them I'm on the Do Not Call registry list. Then they call me back a few hours later. I'm also seeing evidence online that these scammers (claiming to be operating under the LED scheme) are using locals in Australia to break into homes after casing the property under the guise of installing these LED lights. Others complained that the bulbs were free but they were later billed $35 per installation (per bulb). Even more have complained that they were approached a second time and told they needed to replace the near-new LED bulbs with "better, more efficient ones".
In a nutshell, the government foolishly created a legitimate LED replacement scheme in 2015 but it has since been hijacked by scammers in Indian call centers.
