Received a text from this number saying "[my name] you have received one (1) new photo" and an address using groceriesgiftcard.com and a code. I have done some look-ups including whois on this address - don't click it! Firstly the phone number is spoofed, doesn't appear to exist. Trying to reply to the text or call the number fails, it's not real. Link goes to a pretty obvious phising site, that looks like it's the Woolworths supermarket address but it's not! Notice that's just the first part of the address, the actual domain (the last part before the dot com) is actually australia-survey.com. I can't find any positive reference to this supposed survey site, but it is there... along with a HUGE list of fine print that basically boils down to this - they're nothing to do with Woolworths but they ARE associated with a heck of a lot of online data gathering companies in other countries... companies that harvest and sell information about you to other companies. All you're going to get, is spammed! All they're actually offering is a *chance* to win $500 Woolworths vouchers (NOT, repeat NOT, through any special arrangement with Woolworths! - you just have to trust that they bought these vouchers themselves, and gee, I wonder what the actual *chances* of winning one really are!).
Personally I would more expect this site to install some kind of virus.

Why did you get this SMS with your name on it? Most likely through 2 causes - this company, whoever they really are (unknown) sending the text, bought your info from a spammer who sells lists of people's info. Or, someone you know, has a phone with your name (or their nick-name for you), and that phone (your friend's) has been infected with a phone virus. The virus gets your name and number out of your friend's phone and sends you this text. This is a well-known scam going back years and the wording of the text - "you have received one (1) new photo" generates many hits if you google it.

Either way, you DON'T want to click the link in that text! You're not going to get any vouchers, and you ARE going to at least get spammed, if not suddenly finding your phone infected with some sort of virus, that then leads to MORE infections, that then leads to, basically, nothing good!

The main question people want to know is, why does this text have their name on it and where does it come from. This is explained above. But the fact that the number the text came from doesn't exist and can't be called is a major warning. Someone is using probably a computer running software that can "spoof" or falsify a phone number on a text. Phones can't usually do this, unless running special, custom-written software. Not a virus, but the tools the virus-writers use for themselves. A "legit" survey company doesn't hide behind spoofed phone numbers, or link you to sites with dodgy, PO-box-only owners, or infect you with a virus!

Basically, delete without touching. If you use phone app's to block SMS's or calls from certain numbers, block this one! If you're getting lots of these use a "whitelist" - only calls and texts from your own, approved list of contacts are accepted, no others can get through. It won't stop them sending them to you, but it MIGHT help it appear that your number isn't a good target, and hopefully they'll stop sending to you. It might take a while, but eventually, if you are ALWAYS strict about the links you click, and NEVER responding to "bad" numbers, you MIGHT just fall off their radar.
