Caller: Visa/Mastercard Scammer Scammer called and said that $500 from my credit card was used to pay an amazon/ebay purchase. Knew it was a scam, so I played along and pressed 1 to stop the transaction.
Eric answered and said the only way to cancel the transaction was to download and install some Remote Desktop Software (Ultraviewer, Anydesk and Teamviewer). They use these programs to take control of your computer and steal your money, ID etc.
He asked my browser and I said Timberwolf (a type of firefox browser). He asked my computer type and I sad an Amiga X5000. This is an actual computer, but I have not got this one. It can be purchased from www.a-eon.com He was expecting either Apple, Windows or Linux. An Amiga computer always confuses them.
Anyway, since there are no Amiga versions of these programs he tried to get me to download them on my smart phone. I said that I had an old Huawei running Android OS 4.1.2 and that after checking I found out that these programs needed Android OS 5.0+ so I could not install them.
He then went on to confirm details (name, postcode, bank, account balance) I replied with fake details. Just to see what he would do I said that the balance of my Westpac account was around $248000.
I was immediately transferred to his supervisor Matt. Matt informed me that someone had tried to transfer $10000 from my Westpac account but that they had stopped and that they now needed my help to catch the hackers. Apparently the only way to do this was for them to secretly deposit $10000 into my account and for me to withdraw $10000 and pay it into another account. Their deposit would be so secret that when I went to the bank and asked for an account balance it would not even how up. That is how secret it was. However he assured me that the money would be in my account even though I would not be able to see it.
So I asked him why he could not simply transfer the $10000 from their account to the hackers account and make it look like it came from my account. He said that they could not do that because the hackers would know as they had someone inside my bank branch working with them. Apparently this would be the person that would ask me why I was taking out $10000 from my account. Of course this is simply a ploy to make people think that the staff member trying to stop customers from being conned was against them.
I told him that I since Westpac was insecure and they knew that there was a staff member giving out client details that I would simply open up a new account in another bank across the street and transfer all my money there and get a new credit card. Matt tried to convince me not to do this and to transfer my non existent $10000 to his bank account and became mad when I refused. Eventually he hung up. I kept them online for about 25 mins.
If you are going to do this have your own script with all of your fake personal details so that you can drive them nuts.
A Post script is that a couple of days later Eric called again to try the same scam. It took him about 10 mins to realise that I had talked to him before and immediately hung up.
