Caller type: Scam call
Location: Australia
Caller: Visa scammer

Scammer called and said that $800 had been taken from my visa card to buy from Amazon and Ebay.

Scammer said that there were hackers at my local bank selling customer details to scammers.
They wanted me to help them set up a sting to catch these hackers and scammers.
They had me confirm all my details first and transferred me around to make it sound more official so that I would be more likely to agree.
I have a template set up for such a purpose with a whole bunch of fake I.D. and bank details. Even a fake balance of around $250000 to keep them interested. I also say that I do no internet banking and that I only get paper statements through the post. This stops them from getting me to log in online. They took the bait.

The sting apparently involved depositing $15000 into my account and getting me to take out $14000 to catch both the hackers at the bank and the online scammers as well.

They usually say that this money would be hidden from an account balance enquiry by me as it was a special "invisible transaction" but they forgot that bit this time.
Obviously there is no deposit and you would only be withdrawing your own money.
The normal next step after this would be to convert the money into steam or itunes cards and tell them the numbers on the cards. This would send all the money to themselves.

They wanted to call me on my mobile at the bank and keep me on the line while they talked me through the transaction to make sure that they could monitor my progress and probably give me tips (such as saying that the money was to help my relatives). Since I gave them a fake mobile number I could not let this happen so I started an argument with them.

Every time I suggested contacting the Australian Cyber Security Centre https://www.cyber.gov.au/ so that they could help trap the hackers and scammers they refused. Apparently Westpac alone with my help would catch them with their super secret "sting".

Eventually after much arguing I said that since Westpac was apparently full of hackers and scammers and they were unsure exactly who was which that they had lost my confidence in keeping my money there.
I said they could find someone else (such as the Australian Cyber Security Centre) to help them find the hackers and scammers, as I would go to the bank across the road and create another account and then transfer the (fake) money from my (fake) bank account to it and then close my Westpac account.

He sounded really pissed off. After all they had just spent 30-45 minutes of their time trying to scam me for nothing.

However, it is easy to see how they can confuse others with the constant transferring of calls and fake verifications. It pays to be wary with these calls.
