Caller: Recorded message stating call was from the Australian Tax Department When I answered a recorded message played saying the call was from the Australian Tax Department and my tax file number had been used in numerous fraudulent transactions and if I wanted to avoid prosecution which was already in process I needed to press 1 NOW and speak to the consultant handling the case…
THINKING IT WAS A SCAM… I did nothing and just continued to listen and about 5 seconds later the call disconnected…
If this was seriously legit then they would have requested my actions more than just the once before hanging up !! They would have also given me a contact number or ATO department to contact rather than just demanding I press a number to proceed… Finally when I rang the number back it answered then disconnected the call straight away…
THIS IS A SCAM !! PLEASE DO NOT PROCEED IF THIS SCAMMER USES THE SAME PANIC FACTOR WITH A DIFFERENT MOBILE NUMBER !!
