Caller: Scammers NOTE - THE REAL OWNER OF THIS NUMBER IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CALLS! SOMEONE IS FALSELY USING HIS NUMBER!! It's the old ATO scam, this time with a computer voice and it says Press 1 to discuss your case with someone. I always hang up on them. Sometimes I call back just to confirm it's a false number, but this time it belonged to an Australian guy who had no idea his number was being used for this scam. The scammers use "spoofing" which is making a false number appear on the caller ID display to increase the chance that you'll pick it up. They can do this very easily. So this poor guy will probably get lots of calls from people thinking they're tracking the ATO scammers. I explained what had probably happened. The good news is, they usually move on to another number after a day, usually one not in use. The phone companies could block all spoofed numbers from overseas any time, but they don't. Meanwhile these criminals trick vulnerable people, like the disabled and your elderly relatives, out of their money. Disgusting.
