We got a message on our answering machine saying that it was James Appleton from ATO and to ring this number back immediately to avoid prosecution proceedings. I rang and asked who they wanted to speak to and they couldn't tell me my name or any one else''s name in this household. I promptly told them that the ATO owes me money, (which they do) then suddenly a dead line. SCAM..

Premium call number generating income from getting people to call back & keeping them on the phone about their "Tax evasion/debt/penalties etc" problems. Also used to steal identity info. Scam reported.

Just had a message exactly the same from such person!! Thank you guys for posting these comments, saved me from ringing back & getting scammed.

My 82 yo aunt received a phone call from this number also claiming to be James Appleton from ATO. Completely dodgy scammers!

Fake ATO call asking for name of criminal lawyer to represent in tax fraud. Disconnected when I advised that I'd searched and found this was a scam

Had a missed call from this number at 0929 on Oct 4th. No measure left. I called them back and they answered as A.T.O. I asked if he could find out what the call was about and he went silent.. (aside from the voices of several overseas telemarketers in the background). I asked if he could help me or not, to which he replied... "no". I said, this is just another scam isn't it? He said "yes" then hung up. How about that.

A non -english speaking person apparently from the ATO advising me about my tax avoidance. Not possible for many reasons

Apparently Telstra. Calling to ask about which broadband I use and to offer me a business bundle. Too difficult to understand.
