I received a call today from a very lovely Christine. She took me through a tour of the Windows Event Viewer, followed by a visit to the Run -> "inf infections" which takes you to the Windows INF folder. Apparently I had 1,316 infections!! She then pointed me at www.ammyy.com but my virus scanner "detected" it as a virus. So we then tried www.logmein123.com which again my virus scanner "detected" as a virus. At that point I asked for her name and number so I could call her back as I had to go back to "work". :) It was an interesting experience.

tl;dr: COMPUTER MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT is trying to get remote control of your PC to infect it with crap. Just hang up.

I got a call an hour after talking to a dell rep...so I thought the call was connected.  Same thing. They noticed viruses that

They can fix.  They went to their website and I purchased a warranty....at end of call he stated to be clear he was not a Microsoft rep as he had represented himself...I didn't want any more double talk but did tell him that He mislead me.  I emailed them to cancel my order...I mailed Microsoft who informed of the scam and gave me a couple of links to email  to the American trade commission/phone fraud.  I am calling my credit card company to cancel transaction...oh by the way they were calling from uk and were Indian.  Coincidentally, the people I spoke to at Dell were also Indian or from India decent...I will be contacting Dell regarding this as well.

Yesterday I got a call from someone who said their name was Alex from the Computer Maintenance Department. There was no caller ID telephone number, it just read "Long Distance". In his thick Indian accent, he told me that they learned that my computer was infected with malicious files of which I wouldn't be aware. He asked me to go to my computer and he would help me fix it.

I'm a web designer and computer support tech guy. I have anti-virus, firewall, spam filter and have my browser set up to block advertisements and flash application. In addition, I practise "safe computing". Therefore, this sounded very suspicious.

Because I was curious, I decided to do a little test. I told him that before we began, I needed a little information. I asked his name. He told me Alex but refused to give me his last name. I asked for the name of his company. He told me Jars Support. I asked for a telephone number where I could reach him. He said that it wasn't necessary, that he would call me. I told him that I wouldn't proceed unless he gave me a number. He hung up on me!

Obvious scam for the unsuspecting.

I hate to think what would have happened if he had called my naive 85 year old father-in-law!

These ppl (I spoke to a male first then a female) they claimed they were contracted by my internet provider and were calling to help me with my internet access. I did not believe them, it sounded like an overseas phone call. They gave me the number (03) 9014 9868. I rang it and it was a redirected number. They verified their name as 'support virtual'. I then rang my internet provider and they said this company are scamming people.
