Caller: Pro-ported agent from CBA FRAUD SECTION (not the actual deportment THIS MALE PERSON WITH A ACCENT OF INDIAN ORIGIN WAS CLAIMING TO BE FROM THE FRAUD DEPARTMENT OF THE COMMONWEALTH BANK OF AUSTRALIA. THE CALLER WAS CLAIMING THAT A LARGE AMOUNT OF MONEY WAS ATTEMPTING TO BE TRANSFERRED FROM THE ACCOUNT BEFORE BEING CONVERTED TO BITCOIN. BECAUSE THERE WAS A VERY HIGH LIKELIHOOD THAT IT WAS A SCAM, II DECIDED TO CONDUCT A LITTLE PREVENTATIVE ACTIVITY THAT GAVE THE IMPRESSION THAT THEY HAD INADVERTENTLY CALLED A NUMBER RELATING TO OUR AUSTRALIAN FEDERAL POLICE FRAUD AND SECURITY SECTION. I NEVER ALLOWED HIM TO START HIS SCRIPT THAT MANY SCAMMERS FROM COUNTRIES LIKE INDIA USE TO FOOL UNSUSPECTING AUSTRALIANS INTO RELEASING THEIR PERSONAL INFORMATION THAT IS USED IN MANY CIRCUMSTANCES TO STEAL THE TARGETS IDENTITY AND THEREBY ACCESS THE TARGETS BANKING INFORMATION AND BASICALLY WITHDRAW SOME OF THE TARGETS SAVINGS. OFTEN THEY WILL START WITH A RATHER MODERATE AMOUNT WHICH IN THE MAJORITY OF CASES IN IN THE RHELM OF OVER A THOUSAND AUSTRALIAN DOLLARS WHICH LIKE A TEST. IF THEY ARE SUCESSFUL THE FIRST TIME. THEY WILL STEADILY UP THE UNAUTHORISED AMOUNT TILL THEY CANT TAKE AMY MORE. THEY THEN BEGIN TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT TILL THERE IS LITTLE TO NOTHING LEFT IN YHAT ACCOUNT. EFFECTIVELY BLEEDING THE ACCOUNT DRY OR UNTILL ALL TRANSACTIONS HAVE NEEN BLOCKED. AT WHICH TIME, THEY WILL CEASE MAKING ANY MORE ATTEMPTS AND CHANGE THE SPOOFED NUMBER THEY ARE CALLING FROM OR ACCESSING FROM THE INTERNET. GIVEN I DO NOT HAVE A CBA ACCOUNT, IT STOOD TO REASON THAT IT WAS A FRAUDULENT SCAM TO PROVOKE THE UNSUSPECTING TARGET INTO CALLING THEM.AT WHICH TIME, ONCE THE TARGETS MOBILE OR LANDLINE IS CONFIRMED TO BE ACTIVE, THE NUMBER IS HANDED OFF TO ANOTHER OF THE FRAUD TEAM WHO CAN CLOSE THE DEAL ONCE ALL REQUIRED INFORMATION AND THEN THE BUSINESS OF ATTACKING THE TARGETS BANK ACCOUNT AND DRAINING THE ACCOUNT TILL ONE OF THREE THINGS HAPPEN; 1- The account no longer has sufficient funds available, and no more funds are available, 2- The account has been frozen or blocked because the banks internal fraud security has been tripped because the amounts being transferred out of Australia’ prompting the system lock them out and the account is now locked down till the rightful owner of the account is contacted and those withdrawals confirmed or denied. 3- There are no more funds available to be stolen from the target account.
PLEASE BE VIGILANT!!!!! A few basic rules may help you to evade being targeted by these very slick talkers.
1- do not follow any links that are embedded into text messages. 2- if you receive a call from a unknown number. Copy the callers number and paste it into your browsers search program and look for any warnings that may turn up in their databases such as this one (Reverseaustralia.com) and many others like this one. Because the scammers run quite advanced programs that spoof or create Australian phone numbers that look all above board, once that number has outlived its usefulness, they then cease to use that number and is no longer able to called or contacted. 3- text messages in the form of your text SMS messages (text messages and not your Facebook messenger or the like which while all indications indicate that it seems to be far less used because it’s far more easily backtracked ) and text sms’s seems to be increasingly used to fool a unsuspecting target (you the innocent user) into actually following the sms message. SMS text messages often show the number from where the text sms originated. This number when copied and pasted into a search engine can help to confirm one way or another. But frankly, to be totally covered and protected. It’s my opinion while acknowledging that no program is absolutely faultless or perfect goes a long way toward ensuring that you have at best, some form of protection, coupled with vigilance and a pinch of paranoia:-). Personally I do not click on any link from any sms text I receive unsolicited and the number does not match any number you have in your list. You may open the text which often directs you to a number and or link to their site. Copy that number into a search engine to find out its safety. If it comes up with nothing or warning. Treat it as if it’s only a new number being used so hasn’t been reported as yet and may well be the first to report it. Remember that the more information you have and share it with the wider community, the better. You may just save a young or elderly family from having their life’s savings taken away from them. So please, be proactive and don’t just simply sit back and think it’s not your business to be so proactive. The wider community can only benefit from your input. Far more than you realise. Imagine how much you would be gutted and family devastated if it hadn’t been for you seemingly small participation in reporting these leaches. Like you all, I’ve fallen foul to them by not following my own advice by not being vigilant. It’s why I’ve sat down to put my 2 cents worth in, in the hopes that my words regardless of how humble are heard and positive action taken. The criminal scammer leaches could care less about the anguish, pain, and in some extreme circumstances cause a person to commit. You’re all smart people. Please heed my words. Costs nothing and could potentially save you far more than your financial security. It could be your words that could save a good persons life
