They purported to be Telstra, but the ID they gave led to Telstra Incorporated in NY, USA. When I asked for a number to phone them back they hung up.

This is 100% a scam - pretending to be Optus and trying to sell you an NBN product. DO NOT GIVE YOUR DETAILS OUT. Suspected identify theft activities.
