Called at 3.30pm on SUNDAY 29 April 2018. - NSW Police issued this warning today: New telephone phishing scam targeting Mandarin speakers
The scam starts with a message in Mandarin from the criminals stating they are from the Chinese Embassy or a courier company such as DHL. The scammer explains that the person is being investigated for illegal activity, usually relating to their passport and if they don’t comply they will be arrested and deported. If you receive an unsolicited call, it’s best to hang up, research the claims, look the organisation up, and call them back on the legitimate number found on a reliable website to verify. Please remember organisations shouldn’t call you and then ask you to prove yourself. If you have received one of these calls please call IDCARE for assistance 1300 432 273.
