Beware, got same call today, got me to go through all the same motions, as soon as I stated I had just googled the number she finally gave me after countless questions on my behalf and told her she is a smammer, she hung up immediately. She was an Indian sounding woman also, saying she was from Microsoft and my computer is full of viruses. Definately beware.

My Mother just got scammed with this about 10 minutes ago. (02) 9191 6553 is a sydney call centre (probably redirected to/from india) - the backgound noise form the other operators was really loud so it is a large'ish call centre. The staff are definitely indian and don't speak or understand english very well.
this scam is directed at people that are not overly computer literate.
1 - they call and say they work with / are associated with windows - the words are chosen carefully to give the impression of working for microsoft. 2 - They also confirm that you are running windows as part of verifying 'they are contacting the right person' 3 - they tell you that your computer is running slow and this is caused by malicious software. 4 - they tell you that your firewall is turned off and this is partly why you have malicious software. 5 - using very odd descriptions - to avoid using known windows terminology, they talk you through clicking the start button, then run, and in the run dialog box they get you to delete ( they say empty) any existing text and type the work "prefetch', which they spell - not say - using "e for echo" language, which will confuse anyone that's not very computer literate. 6 - a windows explorer window opens at C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch - this is a normal windows folder that normally has lots of files in it. 7 - they verify that you see lots of files that you don't recognise 8 - they tell you that these files are all malicious software and viruses 9 - they talk you through getting onto the internet and signing up for a anti malware package for $179 for two years.
my mother stopped and called me, so I don't know what happens after that. But I did call them saying I was "calling back" and they ran me through the same rubbish. It's a scam intended to catch users that use the computer but are not computer literate/experienced, into buying unnecessary software.

We received a phone call with the same thing stating we have corrupt and milicious files on our computer from a indian call centre. they were asking me to go into out computer through windows r etc i then thought it was strange as i could not hear the guy alot of noise in the background i then questioned him who are you. he wanted me to proceed to a logmein website so a technician can log in then i thought that was strange i asked for his company name he said microsoft call centre i said clearly u are in india he said no he is from nsw and i said what is the st address he said Chapel st in the city i said NOPE that is VIC.... he said his name was Alex Lov and his id is 452 and the number is (02) 9191 6553. we called back and it was a mailbox it was full.. i then rang Telstra to ask if they use or outsource sor this it is a hoax do not let them in your computer...
