It seemed dodgy as I don’t buy wine - and never have - as I am allergic to it

Wine club - phone filtered out the call as spam. This company (i think it's oak road wine estate) has bought so many different phone numbers to call me on - i block each and every one of them - and they still keep on calling!

I returned a call from this number (02) 9098 5777 but no one answered the call

It’s a wine club called Just Wines. You pay a one off joining fee of around $100 and a $40 a month subscription.Your monthly subscription accumulates so you can buy wine with it. It’s like a piggy bank. They call every few months offering their latest wines. I have bought fairly good wine for as low as $7 a bottle. BWS can’t come close to that. So if you are a regular wine drinker it’s well worth it as you save a lot of money. But if you don’t drink wine it’s not worth it.

Suspect this umber is being used to verify "live" phone numbers ... then more attempted scam calls from alternate numbers will follow

I got the feeling he'd had a few too many drinks because his spiel was slurred. He seemed very disappointed with my refusal to buy. It was like he just wanted to chat. To avoid any provocation I gently said thank you, goodnight.

I called back, but it went straight to voicemail. Most likely a scam. Now blocked.

I picked up. Some guy breathed loudly, said hello then hung up

Indian lady saying that she was calling to check the quality on my phone reception. It was a scam!!

I didn't answer as Caller ID identified the number as a Wine Club.
Have received calls from this mob before and they rattle of about getting wine at reduced prices.
My advice...Hang up and block number.

Rattled off a non stop speil about his wonderful wines sold and delivered at never seen before prices for me to cellar and really impress my friends and guests. I told him I'm a member of AA, have been sober for 49 weeks and intend to stay that way for the rest of my life. Amazingly he asked if I would like to take advantage of these bargains and offer them to my friends and relatives. I said no, sorry. I have now blocked this number.

No one spoke, silence, then when I said who is calling? They hung up. Not sure if it was a person or a machine. Perhaps they want to verify an answer, then they can sell my number to a marketing database.
