This is a scam. You would think that they would use a person that spoke reasonable English if they wanted to you to believe it was the Australian Government!

Received call from Indian sounding man claiming tax matters and that if we didn't call they would get legal involved. quoted reference No. 9342

Scam - Indian sounding man leaves message saying from Australian tax office and asks you to call back with a reference for tax fraud or tax evasion.

It's a well worn scam where they will try to get you to pay an amount and obtain additional private information to use for other scams.

I received a call asking me to call them back. They claimed they were a legal firm and requested me to settle a legal claim. This is a NSW number (supposedly) yet I live in S A.

Phoned them back. Gave false details. Apparently they look at your records via your telephone number not your name or tax file number - what a bunch of idiots.

Also, call went overseas - is not in Australia.

Scam but can it be stopped didn't answer

Two messages left my an Indian gentleman stressing I am to call them back tomorrow regarding an unresolved case of unknown yet somehow urgent nature. No name, no details just an indian man insisting I ring them urgently. Scammers. How stupid do they think we are. ?..

Definitely a scam call about tax fraud or evasion. The tax office do not operate this way and this number and scam has been reported. Do not answer or give them money.
