Had 3 x messages left on my answering machine. Basically caller claiming to be from the "Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions" calling on behalf of the ATO Canberra. The caller makes three statements: 1. They have received an "affidavit" concerning tax evasion in my name. 2. They have an received an "arrest warrant" in my name. 3. The residence is "under surveillance" They then go on to say I need to call their "hotline" (02) 6172 0192). Also some other rubbish about them having to contact "state & local authorities" and take me into custody if the call is ignored. Suffice to say once I stopped rolling on the ground laughing I checked here - the number doesn't show up. So look out for it people. I'm going to check Scam Watch now and report it there as well.

I am in Melbourne and just had the same call and Shane on 6 May. When I stopped the call from asking for my details I asked for his, he said in a strong Indian accent that his name was Jake Smith. I told him I'm suspicious and that I'd like to speak to his manager, he told me he'd but his manager Garry Wright on the phone and when he did it was the same guy, he didn't even try to disguise his voice! It pays to ask questions, be aware and it's right to be suspicious.

A family member had a call from these people. So i decided to give them a call. The minute you mention you are a cop they hang up and don't answer again.

Same story - I would add that the voice sounded like it was computer generated rather than a person . Style of language sounded wrong for Aust govt Dept . e.g. referred to avoid a legal "mess" .....

If you receive a call from this number, please go to CDPP.gov.au and find their contact number. This is a scam, and the CDPP are putting together a list of people that call to pass onto the AFP, who are investigating these calls.

Message left on answering machine had a foreign accent and sounded automated, He said that he was from the DPP in Canberra and was acting for the ATO. He stated that they have an affidavit alleging that I had evaded tax and a warrent had been issued for my arrest.. If I do not respond they will arrange for local authorities to arrest me. he said to call the DPP hotline on (02) 6172 0192. He said, do not take this lightly and not to ignore this call. He also stated that my address was under surveillance.

Came up as 0011261720192 on my caller I.D. Foreign accent, could hardly understand. Said he was calling from "Can-berra" regarding something (could not understand half the stuff this guy said), but finished the sentence asking me if I had a lawyer to represent me at my hearing. I hung up. Looking at other reports of this number, it says they claim they're from the ATO and prosectuting tax evasions.
