I received a call about 2:40pm this afternoon from a man claiming to be from the ATO. They asked for my mother by name but I told them that she was not home. They then informed me that they had a very good relationship the government and as such because my mother had participated in a demographic survey (not true) the government had selected her to receive $7200. He gave me this number and told me to get my mother to call back and state the reference number V3675 in order to receive the money (he stated that it would be tax free). When I pressed him for his name, he said it was Sam. I didn't respond for a few moments as I was waiting for him to state a last name. After some "uhhing" and hesitation he gave his surname as Smith. When I asked who he worked for, he got quite angry and said: "Ma'am, I have already told you that I am from the Australian Taxation Office and we have quite a good relationship with the government", he then went on to re-iterate about this supposed demographic survey. Almost 100% certain this is a scam, no way I will be calling them back.
