NBN appointment this morning. Couldn't complete the job. Received phone call from 93192000 asking for my date of birth. Suspicious, I refused. Was asked to phone 1800 834 273. They gave me a Telstra case number (1- followed by 13 numbers). Instead I called Telstra on 132200. It was a legitimate NBN call and Telstra put me through to them.
Summary: this is not a scam number.

Telstra called to offer me good customer service to resolve my issue, and gave me this number to call them on.
I told Telstra that this is the number that I am speaking to them on NOW
They hung up

This is definitely a SCAM. Last year I called Telstra on their normal 13etc number, got through to a Telstra person (woman) in a call-centre in India. Did not get much help at all from this Telstra person and being in a hurry I said don't worry about it I will call back when I have more time.

Immediately (say 10 seconds later) after hanging-up, my phone rang and a different woman with a thick accent said she was from Telstra and I said I am about to leave and can't talk to her now. She said call back on 1800 834 273 when I get home, so I did. When I called back on the 1800 number a man with a thick accent wanted a lot of my personal information which he should have already known if genuine. I smelt a rat, I asked why he needed the info and I thought he was trying to scam me and I would not provide any info and I hung-up.

After that I received calls daily for a week or so, the thing is, this was not a NBN issue I originally called about and the genuine Telstra don't chase customers, the customer always needs to chase them.

Caller: Claiming they are from Telstra

Received a call from (02) 9459 8000, with a voicemail to call this number. After having been scammed by similar calls, no thank you. If you get one of these calls, just go straight to the Telstra App and contact them, or call the Telstra support number to clarify what it is they want from you. It is definitely an inside job...too coincidental. It is exhausting dealing with scammers...whoever Telstra is hiring to do all this support work, I question what information they are sharing with 3rd parties...awful

From the scam baiters videos I have seen the overseas based scammers continue to scam knowing full well the person they are talking to is someone born in the same country as they were. In fact, the banter between the scammer and the call receiver has been related to details about food, places etc that they both know personally.

I'm so sick of this. Every time I try and sort out my NBN with Telstra I get tangled up with these scammers and am unable to discern what the hell is happening. Ive been a Telstra user for many many, years and in the past few years they have become completely incompetent and impossible to deal with. Their customer service is literally less than zero because you can never be sure if your even talking to Telstra or someone who is trying to steal the rest of your data.

I received an sms from (02) 9459 8000 referring me to phone the 1800 834 273 number, about my internet speed. When I called, it was answered by a woman with a very strong accent who spoke very quickly and was almost impossible to understand.
She asked me for my DOB and Telstra pin to verify who I was, which I did not give her and I hung up thinking it was a scam.
I then rang Telstra on their 13 2200 number to ask if the 1800 ... ... was a Telstra official number.
The answer I received was that it was genuine, and was used by Telstra call centres OS incl. India.
However in future I will simply use the 13 2200 number.
I post this as it may save others possible frustration or anxiety.

Of course it's a scam. Asking too many personal questions and always different problems to fix

Called multiple times stating that they're from Telstra and wanted to fix my Wi-Fi - no issues with my Wi-Fi. Phishing for personal details. Hung up.

Received voice mail about my NBN issue with Telstra from a fast talking lady with an Indian accent. Then received a text about one minute later using my correct name - how did they get this info? This is my work phone, not registered in my name, but with it is with Telstra. But my NBN is through Optus!! They want me to call this number within the next 24 hours or my case will be closed!! Must be a scam… no other explanation!!

The scammers might give a Telstra case number and/or a Telstra employee's number. These mean nothing because some oversees Telstra employees sell information to the scammers about Telstra customers (this is often one way how they can contact you in the first place) and they can also get genuine Telstra employee details. In any event there is no timely and effective way for the customer to easily determine what numbers are genuine and what do you do with them anyway, because if you call the genuine Telstra they will not put you through to the employee you ask for.

Most people in Australia have already converted to NBN by now, however in the past couple of years the NBN scammers were very active as shown on scammer bait youtube videos. The Covid did not stop them as they simply worked from home on laptops. I believe the 1800 number referred to on this site was spoofed and redirected by the various scammers for at the very least to collect customers details to use later on scams and sell to the black web - anything to make money.

Caller: Telstra High level support

I expected and received a call from telstra tech support for my NBN service. Missed call they left voice mail with that number. Called it and say "optus advises the mobile number is not connected". Called Telstra directly and spoke to their tech support. They confirmed the number is theirs but still when I try to call it it says the above failure message. Very strange.

Caller: NBN?

Called stating they were NBN and if my lights on modem were lit or flashing, suspected a scam, advised they are all lit, everything is fine. They wanted to take control of our Modem for "improvement" but this is where I said No, and can they send my a company e-mail advising what / who they were and what was the call about? I tried asking where they were based and was given a full street address in Melbourne, I don't believe it so blocked call. Cheers

100% Scammers. Do not allow these scum bags to keep you on the phone. Ask them to supply your NBN account number, they try to talk around giving you that info. Report calls using this number as ref straight to police like I did. Any comments on here stating that it’s a legitimate number/call is part of the scam to fool honest hard working people. Scum of the earth

I've always wanted to know the answer to this question.......What would happen if a scammer with a thick accent called stating they were from Telstra and a person with an equally thick accent living in Australia answered the call, would the scammer proceed with the scam or not? How do you think this would play out? I think the scammer would continue with the call and develop a rapport with the person they called and suck them right-in! Any thoughts on this?

I believe this is legit from call centre in India. Called to check I was satisfied with the NBN technician who came earlier and to ring 1800 834 273 if I wasn't. I was so didn't call back.

Try this one folks, a friend of mine went into a Telstra store in Australia to buy a new mobile phone and while in there he asked about the 1800 834 273 number to see if it was genuinely Telstra. He was told Telstra did have some problems with the number in the past but it's fixed now. WOW!

This is my comment/question, why is it that when you are speaking with Telstra people on the phone (not really knowing if they are genuine Telstra or not) they will say call Telstra on the 1800 834 273 number and then press option number whatever. This seems unusual to me and might be the source of the scam issue, because why do they do that and not just let the caller call the number, hear the options and simply choose the relevant option number most relevant to their issue. It could be that the option they insist on offering when they say to call is not a legitimate extension and the call goes elsewhere or to particular staff in a call centre doing scams. Any ideas on this?
