1300 768 912 checks out as a legit ATO contact number often used when data matching identifies possible income errors on a tax return (hence why it can be years ago). I have ATO correspondence showing that contact number.

It also seems they piggyback that tele number too. If you receive it or something like it, hit your mygov account and go from there.

Btw... I'm all clear for 2018.

I got the same type of message recently- do you know yet if it's real or not? I haven't called the number yet cause I'm not sure if it's a scam or not

My wife received this msg today,

My sister got the same sms last week. Did you ring the number? ATO on the 132861 confirmed it is not a legitimate number but on the ato official website it says it is according to a community support officer. I smell a rat

Definitely SCAM!!

Sent letter supposedly from the ATO data matching team both me and my spouse contact 1300 768 912 or datamatchingteam @ ato.gov.au saying we owe for Medicare Levey Surcharge MLS sort of indicating we said we had private health care but did not provide statements. stated incomes where on letter was kind of with in range of our income but a bit higher but still under the MLS limit. looked real but just little things just did not match. Pretty sure it is a scam

Just received post mail, saint I need to put in a tax return for 2017, or phone this number,1300 768 912

Received call from private number. Caller said he is from ATO asking for my details. He said he wants to access my account but he doesn't have any of my details with him.
Gave me call back number 1300 768 912/ Not sure if a scam from insider or not.
If the caller is from ATO then they should have all my details.
For everything ATO send letter by post. Just wondering what is the need for them to have my details over phone.
I asked him to send me email.

Possibly it's an ATO insider, using the number 1300 768 912, who is privy to confidential personal info. If so, this is their possible scheme: They call and ask you about claims you would have made in tax return. Once you handover your TFN and your details, they can do anything (accessing your account to make changes, including your Mygov-temporarily changing your details and then covering their trails by 'fixing' your details again after their scheme).
