Exactly the same scenario - elderly couple told their internet would be cut off for a month, but the caller could help them fix the problem by guiding them through a few changes on the computer. Same caller name, Jacob Brian, and same number, (07) 5641 2120, with an extension of 9519, calling from 'Telstra'.
This is a scam and the caller should be told that they are known to be scammers, then hang up.
Please pass this around.

Alert! Phishing Scam!
This is the call-back number given out by phishing scammers using the old Windows Event Viewer scam. They're now claiming to be from Telstra; previously they've claimed to be from Microsoft. The crook I spoke to called himself Jacob Bryan. I think he even claimed this number was their corporate help line. He later had the gall to call me back and, when I said I wasn't interested, he said my Telstra broadband would be cut off for 3 months. Pity we're not with Telstra. When they cold call, their calling number is 0011976000. See comments about this number for more details, or just do a Google search for the Windows Event Viewer phishing scam; the Computerworld article/comments on it is not bad. The only other novelty in the tragic spiel was their request to enter info hacked files in the "Run" box, which seems to be a minor variation on previous entries such as "inf hacking". A pox on all these crooks!

Alert! Phishing scammer!
This is the call-back number given to me by a phishing scammer who called himself Jacob Bryan. He rang our home phone claiming to be from Telstra (previously, others have claimed to be from Microsoft) and tried to use the old Windows Event Viewer phishing scam.
The only novelty in his lame and dodgy spiel was that, after he asked me to use Eventvwr, he asked me to enter inf hacked files in the "Run" box.
I've no idea what this does and it seems to be a new, minor variation on previous Run box entries that these scammers have previously used, such as "inf hacking". The other novelty is claiming to be from Telstra (rather than Microsoft) and claiming that they will have to cut off the broadband connection because malware is supposedly corrupting their routers and systems. What a joke! Especially the lame spiel delivery with an accent as clear as mud!
