This is called active phone number farming. A computer runs through all numbers in the list of millions of combinations, and records which ones answer. This list of "active" phone numbers are then sold to telemarketers. India has been doing it for over 10 years, they call the australian phone (07) 3177 3332) which diverts the call through to your phone. ACMA don't seem interested as their Do Not Call Register only applies to phone calls originating from Australian companies.

I answered and it hung up!
Its no wonder that I let fly at telemarketers, this is what they do then they will call you late at night.

I have received several calls today from people asking why we have been pranking them.

I was then directed to this page. We have not been pranking anyone. One person has obviously put our name down for whatever reason.

Same as everyone else. Numerous calls on an almost daily basis, sometimes more than once per day, & when I answer it hangs up on me! Disrupting my work.

Our business is receiving the same thing, calling our number and hanging up when you answer. Don't you love people who waste your time. Could actually be taking real business calls instead of having a time waster.
