The amount of people on the defense..'these dodgy people are trying to contact me..I don't owe the money..they're breaking the law by asking for my private information..I was sent a letter but it doesn't tell me what it was for..' Come off it guys..you all know it's a collections agency, they're contacting you because you either owe money, you are a relative or next of kin to someone who owes money or you perhaps own a recycled phone number or you live at an address that the person in question used to have. It's not that big of a deal, no you can't go to the police because they won't do anything because it's not a crime..yes you're within your rights to seek legal advise or speak to the ombudsman but if you owe money to a company or they've purchased your contract and you try to dispute it by seeking legal advice or by making complaints to get out of liability you're just prolonging the process and quite honestly you're going to embarrass yourself - these businesses are legitimate and they know their rights as well as yours...if you are the person they are trying to contact then the company is within their rights to ask for your details to ensure you're the intended person so they're not giving all your personal info to any tom, d*ck or Harry..I'm sure you wouldn't like people knowing you have an outstanding financial obligation hence the secrecy..it's to protect you. And if they have the wrong person, tell them so and they'll move on, no harm done. If you have a debt and you avoid it, it'll catch up with you and it will be an inconvenience so just deal with it rather than facing a big fat default on your credit file or even worse legal action where your wages or bank could be garnished without notice, a process server could turn up to your home or place of employment, a sheriff could turn up to tag your goods of value to sell at auction to recover moneys owed, a caveat could be placed on your property/land title or (not likely but still possible) you could be forced into bankruptcy and lose everything, even your job prospects could be affected by this. It's quite serious, don't let the molehill turn into a mountain!

Private numbers late at night, I picked up once to have no one answer me, just silence, then 2 minutes later a new Probe voicemail popped up. Over and over. The exact same automated message to ring them, over and over. I know I had an outstanding bill with tolling for about $25 which I have just paid but this stupid probe group keeps leaving messages, and also automatic texts that I cannot text reply too. I read somewhere (could be wrong) that the technique they are using requires YOU to call THEM by choice and therefore terminates any claim of harrassment.

I suppose they should consider themselves lucky that I won't ring and they won't actually speak when I answer their calls, because by now they would recieve such a mouthful from me that their hearing would be permanently affected.

Terribly managed company. Deal with the organisation you owe funds to, not these clowns. I'll be ringing up the organisation I paid my bill too again and enquiring if they send unpaid contracts to Probe, and then explaining the terrible experience I've had.

I have been receiving calls from a blocked number for a week but when I answer it hangs up after 3 seconds. I contacted Telstra about it and they have put a tracking on it for the next month. Once they have called me again 3 times in a week they will send a warning out. It's a free service for anyone having the same experience. This is the number 1800 805 996 and its a free call. I just received a message from probe to say call them urgently I assume it is the same people.

First it started with a text saying to contact Mendelsons Lawyers urgently on 1300 872 495 and quote a reference number. This has progressed to phone calls from different numbers, the caller wont tell me what their calls are about until i give them my info. which i don't give, I'm getting sick of messages and or phone calls from these pricks, how can i stop this? Has anyone else experiencing this?

I used to work for Mendelson Lawyers. They purchase debts from companies like Telstra and large Electricity companies. It is NOT a scam. It would be wise to at least talk to the caller. Failure to investigate what the call is about will result in a report being lodged with Equifax and will impact on your credit rating. They are there to help you so that this doesn't happen. It may be that somebody has used your details to open an account, or you have moved and not received a final bill and so this needs to be dealt with. I have dealt with people who thought it was a scam too but when she found out it was legit was in tears because of a default on her name, all for the sake of $100. People who work there don't use their real names to protect the workers from abuse. You can Google Mendelson Lawyers who work in conjunction with Pruska Fast Debt Recovery.

I got a letter from Geoffrey Mandelson saying that they are collecting debt on behalf of Simply Energy but I suspect this might be identity theft as they also send the same letter to another person with the same address, who has never been here or stayed here. As far as I am concerned, I paid all my bills but since this is a rented property, it might have been from the person before. Upon consultation with the person who lived here before ( a friend who I took the lease from) she showed me ALL her bills and has ALWAYS paid her bills.

Not sure what to do here. I tried ringing them but no answer. Does anyone have any similar situation?

If your debt has prescribed;
It has been dormant for three of more years, a debt collector cannot ask you to pay off your debt and it is against the law if they do. The National Credit Amendment Act, published 13 March 2015, prohibits the sale and collection of Prescribed Debt. Thus, you do not need to know about prescription and will not have to raise it as a defence in order to prevent you from having to pay for the debt. Unless the debt collector or credit provider can prove that your debt is not prescribed, tell them to stop harassing you. It is advised that you also put this in writing, so that there is a record of it. If they persist, request the original loan agreement/contract, proof of default, the outstanding amount and interest accrued. This should stop the debt collector from harassing you.

I keep getting calls and messages to call back Mendelsons Lawyers from 0439 535 996. Lucky my Samsung identifies it as a spam and comes as Potential Fraud when I have an incoming call. I don't owe money to anyone, nut sure why I am getting these calls.

Any idea how to get them blocked?
