Caller type: Scam call
Location: Australia
Caller: Ken Wilson, aledged Telstra Employee Id # D005115

Called out-of-the blue claiming to be from Telstra calling to fix slow internet connection. He had a slight Indian type accent and it seemed his name didn't match with his accent. He first said our internet would be cut for a week while Telstra fixed the slow internet connection everyone in my suburb of Sydney was experiencing and complaining about. Then he wanted me to look up some details on my computer to start with the process. He tried to gain trust by directing me how to look up the Events Viewer window which he claimed showed problem events related to the slow internet connection being caused by security problems. I could not see anything there which seemed to me to be related. After that he then tried to get me to open up the website www.anydesk.com through the run window so a technician could connect to my computer to fix the internet connection. (Note: this course of action was at odds with the initial explanation that our internet would be out for a week) Before I agreed to execute this, I did a quick google search on 'anydesk Telstra" and quickly saw a bunch of scam alert results. With this and noticing throughout the call how "Ken" kept trying to pressure me to make quick decisions, the Events Viewer step seemed like it was just trying to build trust to then fool me, and his name and accent didn't make sense, and just being doubtful that this is a course of action which Telstra would take I then confronted him and said I'm having trouble believing him and asked for his employee ID and return phone number which he gave as (03) 9028 2590. He then explained there is a unique security ID which only a Telstra employee would know and that he would give it to me and I can then look it up on my computer. I took down the alpha-numeric code and followed his instructions to open the command (cmd) window and type in assoc at the end of the file path already on screen e.g. C:\Users\me>assoc and then find the code near the end of the results, the CLSID code which lo and behold matched what he had already told me prior. I didn't see how that proved anything and I told him so and asked why wouldn't Telstra send out a letter warning that someone would be calling about this to fix it and he didn't have a good enough answer. He was a bit belligerent and not really friendly but a bit too pushy. It sounded like he was in a noisy call centre with lots of others talking in the background. I ended the call by saying I was going to hang up now and finish my dinner (which by this stage his call had interrupted for about 10 minutes) and have a think about whether to call him back or not. He was quick to hang up then. I have not called back because it is obviously a scam.

Caller: Ken Wilson - same person from Telstra???

Had a similar call as this from Ken Wilson saying the Internet was going to be down for a week from tomorrow and asking me to turn on my computer. The phone number he was calling from was (02) 9856 9854, but he said he was calling from Telstra Melbourne. I asked what country his accent was from - he said he was from Ghana. (I did ring this number back but there is no such number.) I asked his Telstra ID - D22515 and also asked a phone number for me to call back on - was given (03) 9028 2570 which is very close to the number in this report. He was very persistent that I turn on my computer. I asked how much it will cost me if I find anything - he said it wont cost anything (ha ha). I asked him if this was a Scam. He said no. So I then said good night you Scammer.
