They called my mum claiming to be "Jack Thompson". She told them that was an actor's name and the guy supposedly had no idea (clear indication that he's not an Aussie I would say, as he would have definitely been told that before if he was). He went through the motions of telling my mum there was a problem with her internet connection and that it was going to be disconnected tomorrow. Now, she's not stupid and likes to lead them on a bit... she asked the guy "how do you know if I even have a computer?" and he didn't reply, she also asked him to state her (the account holder's) name and location, and they couldn't. She asked to speak to his supervisor and he gave her this number to call.... She called back, she believes the same guy answered using a different name.
She ended up calling Telstra to let them know, and they said the number had been traced back to somewhere in India.
In my mum's smallish country town and surrounds these calls have been rampant, concerning still that people are being tricked.
Always say you will call back on the known number (not the one they give you) to be sure you are speaking to who you need to be!
Take care everyone!

the person you should look at for these scams is Adam Sabatini - trying calling him on 0406 414 128 or 0450 155 537 He is the guy behind this scam

Had an Indian accented fellow call saying he was from Telstra's Technical Dept and that my internet service was being disconnected! Was told there were problems and many reports in the area. In other words, I said, you have to do maintenance to which there was no confirmation. I then mentioned I had some connection problems and was told that I had an infection on my computer that was slowly getting worse each day and was affecting their satellite. (AS IF) He then without my asking gave me his name (Mark Gibson - didn't match his accent) and employee number (DTA8842). He gave me my CLS ID number which I was supposed to type in. What he didn't know was I've dealt with these same people before and knew what they were up to. I told him I was too busy and would ring back later (always intending on ringing BigPond's number). Again without asking, he gave my this number to call back on. I then rang Bigpond and reported the fake call.

Hi, this is defeinitely a scam. There's no point ringing 1800 673 455 - these calls are coming from overseas and are generally coming via Voice Over IP (VOIP) so tracing is near impossible. You're better off reporting all the details to the Australian Government's ScamWatch service on 1300 795 995 or via their webform at https://www.scamwatch.gov.au/content/index.phtml/tag/reportascam/.

A Susan Smith gave this number and claimed to be a Telstra technician. She was basically trying to access my computer remotely. Called Telstra to check. It's a SCAM...If you call the number, people do answer and introduce themselves as Telstra employees!!!

Yep, same with me. Called saying she was from Telstra. That they detected a virus on my computer and wanted me to sit in front of it while they gave instructions to delete. Ask for a number and she gave me the (03) 9018 5669 with an employer number! Called Telstra they confirmed a scam. They gave me Telstra scam number to call if they call back 1800 673 455.
