Caller: A very busy Indian call centre claiming to be Telstra I stayed on the line to see what the scam was after I was getting a call 'from Telstra'. I immediately checked my telstra app while on the phone to check in the unlikely case the call was legitimate (I don't think Telstra have ever called me in my life, unless I was waiting on a call to sort something out).
They said they'd like to give me a '50% discount on my bill', unfortunately they did have a valid email address I used to use as well, so probably taken from a leak as they had matched an email to my number.
Anyway so the scam was; in order to get the '50% discount', I had to read out six digits to 'authenticate' myself. I had presumed they were attempting to hack into my actual Telstra account which I thought was odd, obviously I wouldn't give them the 2FA but I said 'yes OK' to what would happen next, I got a six digit MICROSOFT (not Telstra) PASSWORD RESET CODE messaged to my mobile - from Microsoft, so they were actually trying to hack into an old Outlook email address that belonged to me.
I'm sure in an hour or two they'll continue to do the same thing from another cheap Australian landline number. Quite easy to catch someone off guard where they don't read the SMS and read out the digits, then lose their email account forever.
They seem to be getting more brazen/aggressive. Imagine being in the 'business' of scamming people and fraud, wow.
