I was just contacted by someone at the same number who said they were from FedEx also calling to get a package released from customs. I was asked to pay import duty/GST & when I checked my credit card statement 2 minutes later it appeared legitimate.

Yup was fedex for the reasons above, my package had been put on fast track while in flight from customs so could pay before hand to get it all done quicker. If your worried just call fedex yourself via the net number or whatever. It's what I did and was legit. A lot of contact centres are in the Philippines...nothing new there...nor is it new companies wanting payment.

Received a call from (02) 9500 0001 advising they were Fed ex seeking payment for customs and duty taxes for a box of medals made in Thailand. Told them it did not sound right as we have a Free Trade agreement with Thailand as it was a (DC) or developing country. They have then contacted the manufacturer and followed up that end after i said I had made full payment.
After thinking it was a scam, it appears to be held up in clearance at Alexandria in AU for the last 4 days.
Rang them this morning and it appears that despite the Free Trade agreement the changes are legit and are associated with import at this end.
So as a break down of costs for an box of medals listed as value of $28,000 BAHT (roughly $1035) Which just drops me over the $1000 which would have meant that it would have passed duty free and been delivered:
GST - $123
Import Tax - $52.87
Customs duty - $56.20.
This turns out to be just below 25% of the total cost of the shipment because i ran $35 over the $1000 threshold. Big learning curve.

Keep your orders a bit smaller and you will save yourself a couple of hundred dollars.

Cheers Ron

Had a call from (02) 9500 0001 and the caller claimed to be from FedEx seeking a payment for customs duty charges on a package of electrons imported from USA to Sydney.
I did not want to give credit card info over the phone to the caller so i told them id call back, they said no hassle.
I went online and got FedEx phone number 13 26 10 from the FedEx website
http://www.fedex.com/au/dropoff/
The caller also supplied me with a more secure payment option by EFT - they emailed me the info from the fedex.com domain so it appeared legitimate.
There was genuinely money owing to customs on a parcel so i made a payment and parcel was cleared from customs delivered the next morning.
I have no reason to believe it was a scam but I still would not give credit card info over the phone to a caller as a matter of security. If you are expecting a package just do your own research, get your parcel tracking number, and track its location online, if you need to pay customs charges call FedEx back on their public toll free number or arrange EFT for your own security.

They actually call a few days prior to it landing in Alexandria Sydney. So it doesn't delay the parcel from being delivered.

Its FedEx asking for customs clearance anything over 900$ imported from overseas to australia you have to pay clearance fees. I always call back the 13 number to double check.

Got a call from them, they are a scam company. Ask them to send you an email, you will see that their email address is from .com.ph (Philippines)

They contact you from an Australian number and push you to pay over the phone, they also get a copy of your FedEx invoice somewhere along the line (mine was stolen in either Canada or the US)

FedEx will NEVER ask you to pay for duty. This happened when received by AusPost.

I kept him on the phone for about 10 minutes asking all these questions, he said that it was ready in Sydney, but that was totally different to what the official tracking was on FedEx website. Further to that, he ended up admitting that he was working on 'behalf' of FedEx from overseas... I told him that I had reported it to Customs and also to FedEx (which I had). They confirmed that this was a load of rubbish.

What makes them hard to spot is they actually send you a copy of your invoice and all the paperwork looks really legit. Its not.

ITS A SCAM

Note that its unlisted and you cant reply - not FedEx, more like someone trying to get your credit card number!

It was FedEx calling to get a package released from customs.

Good idea to answer it, if you want your stuff to be delivered on time. Note that you might have to pay import duty/GST if the value of your package is high enough.
