Same scam call I've had a few times last year, well spoken male saying if I don't call them back the ATO will have me charged etc & the police will arrest me, blah;blah;blah. I wish I was home to answer it & give them a bloody earfull!! If this was an older person who believed their crap it would be very distressing as has happened recently. Why can't Telstra do something when we actually have a return phone number ? Never return any calls you don't recognize, these people are ####holes!

Received a call on my answering machine from the ATO legal depart. regarding tax avoidance and evasion, not to ignore the call and ring back immediately, which I did in a very aggressive manner. He seemed quite frightened and quickly hung up. I have a feeling that he soiled his pants.

Why doesn't someone do something about this ?

Came home today and had a threatening message on my answering machine from a male with an accent calling himself Janette?? Mathews from the ATO working for the CDPP and they were prosecuting me for tax evasion and tax fraud over a 4 year period. I phoned the number and the same voice told me his name was Officer Alex Cooper - I challenged him, told him to put it in writing and I would take their letter to my solicitor. He got aggressive, I hung up. He called back so let it go to the machine, he left a nasty message. A few minutes later he rang again, this time in a deeper voice he said me he was Officer Brad Johnson from [my local] Police Station and he said that if I didn't pick up the phone he was coming down there and he would "get me". I have reported the number and the incident to the ATO and my local police station. What a nasty scam - imagine if you were an infirm or vulnerable person, the stress would be dreadful for them.

Caller claims to be from the tax office. Said there is legal action against me for Tax evasion. Asked me to call this number.

Same threatening call left on answering machine two weeks ago alleging from the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions on behalf of the Australian Taxation office about a legal case against me for tax evasion and tax avoidance. Instructions to call back on (02) 8880 0211 immediately and more threats about being an urgent matter and must call 02888000211.

My concern is also about the vulnerable victims who might be harassed into being extorted by these scammers

Yep, alleged call from the CDPP about 4 years worth of tax avoidance or evasion. "Do not ignore this call, you or your lawyer call back immediately". Very aggressive tone and Indian accent with no name given

Received the same call today. He stated he was from the ATO and someone was being prosecuted for tax fraud. Strange thing is that no actual person was named as the offender, so is it my husband or myself or one of my children??? How can we stop these people and save anyone vulnerable to actually respond to there demands???

Yes, a message left saying he is from the tax office. I wonder, if you asked who the call was for, would they have any idea.

Also have had this number call twice today. First time rang out. Second time left a voicemail with the same story about tax evasion (mispronounced) and calling the ATO legal department. Voice sounds robotic to me.
So far I've ignored it but I'm now waiting for another call...

My dad has received mulitple calls from (02) 8880 0211 asking him to call this number as he is being investigated by the ATO, quiet frightening as he is exempt. I did phone this number back and the call keeps dropping out!!!

Got this threatening message on my 82yr old fathers answering machine saying he is being prosecuted for tax evasion, knew for a fact that was never true - preying on the elderly is the lowest form of scum they should be shot

I got this too. Initially frightening. Mispronounced 'evasion' as 'ewasion'. I agree with the comments that this could really frighten an older or frail person - even give them a heart attack.

A recorded message from a person claiming to be Kevin Mathews from the Tax Office saying that I am being charged with tax evasion, left a message on my machine. Slight Asian accent.

Claims to be from Tax Office, legal action against me, to ring them immediately. What a disgrace. So over these types of calls.

This is a SCAM.
Do not ring them back and report all details to our ATO so they can investigate, I did.
The scammer, Kenneth Matthews does not work for the Canberra ATO
